The best in Spanish is coming! La Liga 2024/25 will be on DStv, catch it ALL!
The 2024-25 La Liga season is set to enthral, with the first round of matches spread over five days from Thursday 15 to Monday 19 August, and headlined by champions Real Madrid playing away to Mallorca.
The first match of the campaign comes from the San Mames Stadium on Thursday, as Athletic Bilbao look to build on the promise, they showed last season when Getafe head to the Basque Country.
Los Leones have a star in their midst in the shape of Nico Williams, who enjoyed a great Euro 2024 for Spain. The winger has been strongly linked with a move away from the club, but manager Ernesto Valverde has remained calm in the face of such speculation.
“He [Williams] is happy with us and we're happy with him also,” noted Valverde.
Thursday also features Girona – last season’s surprise package – start the new campaign with a tricky clash away to Real Betis, while Friday is headlined by Sevilla playing away to Las Palmas at the Gran Canaria Stadium.
Saturday’s headline clash from the Mestalla Stadium, as Valencia host Barcelona. The visitors have appointed Hansi Flick as their new manager, but the German tactician has been unable to make major additions to the squad due to the club’s perilous financial situation. Nonetheless, he remains bullish of the Blaugrana’s prospects.
“At the moment, I am really happy with what I see,” said Flick. “I think we have players in the team that can play [...] really well. All the players know what they have to do. It could also be the younger players, from La Masia [the academy].”
Sunday is all about reigning champions Real Madrid, who will open the defence of their title away to Mallorca at the Son Moix Stadium – with goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois expressing his excitement over Kylian Mbappe joining the team.
“Mbappe is one of the best players in the world and in the end, it’s better for him to be on your team than against you,” said the Belgian. “He is a player who can make a difference as we have with [Jude] Bellingham, with Vinicius [Junior], and adding Mbappe to that will only help us.”
Monday wraps up the first matchday with Espanyol marking their return to La Liga with a clash away to Real Valladolid, followed by a potential thriller between Villarreal and Atletico Madrid at La Ceramica Stadium.
