Barriers to Certification: Cost
One of the most significant barriers to obtaining a certification is the cost. Whether it’s the price of study materials, training courses, or exam fees, the expenses can add up quickly. However, there are numerous ways to minimize these costs and even have them covered entirely. Here's how you can leverage free resources and involve your employer to keep your certification journey budget-friendly.
Utilize Free and Low-Cost Resources
In addition to company support, numerous free and affordable resources can help you prepare for certifications:

Leverage Company Support
Many organizations recognize the value of having certified professionals on their teams and are willing to invest in their employees' professional development. Here's how you can involve your company in covering the costs of your certification:
1. Check Existing Policies
· Professional Development Funds: Many companies allocate annual budgets specifically for employee training and certifications. Review your company's employee handbook or inquire with HR to understand what resources are available.
· Tuition Reimbursement Programs: Some organizations offer reimbursement for courses and exams related to your field. Ensure you know the application process and any prerequisites needed to qualify.
2. Present the Business Case
· Highlight Benefits to the Company: Prepare a brief proposal outlining how your certification will benefit your role, team, and the organization's objectives. Emphasize improved skills, increased efficiency, and the ability to take on more complex projects.
· Show Alignment with Company Goals: Connect your certification goals with the company's strategic plans. For example, if your organization is moving towards cloud solutions, obtaining a cloud certification directly supports that transition.
3. Suggest Knowledge Sharing
· Offer to Train Colleagues: Propose sharing the knowledge you gain through workshops or training sessions within your team. This amplifies the return on investment for your employer.
· Lead Internal Projects: Commit to applying your new skills to lead or improve current projects, showcasing immediate benefits from your certification.
4. Explore Internal Training Opportunities
· In-House Training Programs: Some companies provide internal training sessions or have partnerships with training providers. Take advantage of these opportunities to learn and get certified at no additional cost.
· Mentorship Programs: Engage in mentorship or coaching programs within your organization to gain insights and support throughout your certification journey.
5. Negotiate as Part of Performance Reviews
· Set Professional Development Goals: During performance evaluations, set certification as a goal and discuss potential support from the company in achieving it.
· Tie Certifications to Career Progression: Illustrate how obtaining certain certifications can prepare you for advanced roles within the company, making it a mutually beneficial investment.
Final Thoughts
While the cost of certification can be a substantial barrier, combining employer support with available free resources can significantly reduce or even eliminate these expenses. Investing time in discussing opportunities with your company and exploring cost-effective study options pays off by enhancing your skills, boosting your career prospects, and adding value to your organization.
Remember, professional certifications are not just personal achievements—they contribute to your team's and company's success. Don't hesitate to seek support and utilize available resources on your certification journey. The long-term benefits far outweigh the costs, leading to sustained professional growth and opportunities.

3moSo glad you called this out, Sharon. First, I'd like to add another helpful resource - Microsoft recently published free practice assessments for their exams at https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/credentials/certifications/practice-assessments-for-microsoft-certifications. But second, just to add my 2 cents, I think it's so important to make technology education accessible to people regardless of their financial means, and we can't assume that a person is in a position to fund certifications themselves, even if they seem like they would be financially comfortable to do so. People are fighting battles we don't know about - for instance, supporting family members, recovering from unforeseen life events, or making less than they are worth. One of the reasons I love working with Microsoft technology is the way that technical knowledge is shared so freely online. I've been able to create a career for myself without a traditional educational background. Thank you Sharon for doing your part to break down these barriers!

3moMy personal view: I know these r investment but i still feel the cost all included plus the membership fees are too exhorbitant especially for people outside us or europe. Everything is separately charged. I feel if they bring some changes it will make these courses even more popular. I recently enrolled for one such cert local chapter membership. Its been almost a month and i have not even received a single mail from local chapter welcoming me let being added in whats app group or sending invitation for events being organized locally.
