Avoiding A Slow Job Search

Avoiding A Slow Job Search

Given the high level of competition in 2023's job market, combined with the increased layoffs/hiring slowdowns expected in an upcoming recession, you probably want to avoid a slow job search.

But what are you doing to try to accelerate your search?

You're probably using many of these strategies that slow your search, if you're like most job seekers:

  1. Sending the same or minimally customized resume: The average job seeker spends 15 minutes customizing their resume ... it's not nearly enough to get through automated and human pre-screening often.
  2. Creating a first impression that asks employers "I've got a lot of stuff ... Do you need any of it?": You probably do this in interviews as well as in your resume.
  3. Including content with the goal of appearing qualified: When you appear qualified, this makes you look average to employers, so you need a higher goal.
  4. Sending cover letters: It's an obsolete tradition that makes you look outdated and not digitally aware.
  5. Relying on job descriptions and JobScan: Job descriptions rarely describe a hiring manager's current needs.
  6. Applying to jobs online: You'd never do this if you knew how poor the odds are of landing a job by applying on job boards, company career pages, Applicant Tracking Systems or LinkedIn. And if you realized poor quality interview types online applications are used to fill, you'd never do this.
  7. Relying on application volume and hoping you'll get lucky: Spray and pray is not the way to avoid a slow search.

How many of the above strategies are you using in your search, because you were advised by career resources that these would work? It's time for you to realize that while these are job search strategies, they just aren't very effective ones. They are especially ineffective in a highly competitive job market, like we see in 2023.

Fortunately, there are solutions that work better to make your job search faster during the mass competition we still see in 2023. These strategies will help you make your search much faster whether you're currently employed or unemployed, or if you're trying to beat employer ageism, get past ATSs, product/job function/career/industry/ geographic change, seeking raise/promotion, remote positions, "bouncy" recent career path, job search turnaround, industry in decline/consolidation, long term gaps, family leave, or other of the most challenging job search issues.
