Alan Mitchell Market Review and Insights

MARKET UPDATE

With everyone back from summer holidays the recruitment market into Corporate Finance is picking up slowly. We are finding that many of our mid-market investment banking clients are looking to build their teams at all levels from Analyst through to Director. Crucial skills they are focused on are strong financial modelling at analyst level, languages and sector specialisations.

There is still an air of caution affecting recruitment into our sector as everyone is waiting for the outcome of the Autumn budget and the results of the US election.  The most telling factor will be confirmation of the government plans for CGT and the effect that will have on markets and M&A activity.

There is a positive feel to the sector, but with year-end approaching and many deals taking longer to complete, recruitment processes are slowing down as key decision makers are focussed on completing transactions before year end, to ensure they are reflected in the bonuses. With this focus on execution, we are also finding that our clients are reviewing profiles with transaction services experience, as well as M&A and other advisory experience, for their M&A and corporate broking teams. If you would like to talk through your own personal situation and find out more about our current jobs, please email Kathy Lambert (kathy@alan-mitchell.co.uk), our Head of Research.

September is also the time of year for newly qualified ACA’s who are looking to make the move into M&A Advisory or Corporate Broking, to get in touch with us as many of our clients are actively recruiting at analyst level. Opportunities are varied and although having existing M&A or transaction experience is beneficial, we do have options for newly qualified ACAs with audit experience. Key for our clients is strong academics, financial modelling skills and proven understanding and commitment to the sector. Please see the key topic section below for an insight in what a career in M&A is really like.

The focus on moving teams back to working in the office is continuing as is the drive for building diverse teams. A lot of our clients are making fabulous head way with prioritising and establishing a better gender balance in their teams.
