AI Makes the Strategist the King
The Strategist Is Now the KING
I've been using Magai a lot. It's an elegant interface for ChatGPT and GPT-4, plus a collection of AI-powered image-creation tools.
It's so simple.
And, it includes dozens of pre-built personas, so if you want to learn from a robot standup comedian about how to file a tax return in France, you can do so.
And I did.
It's a real time-saver.
Soon enough, EVERYONE (including all of your competitors) will be fully stocked with generative AI assistants.
We'll all be churning out instantaneous proposals, contracts, ads, emails, speeches, photos, poems, songs, and all the rest.
The most prolific humans like Stephen King, Taylor Swift, and Donald Trump defense attorneys, won't be noteworthy, because volume of work created will no longer be a differentiator.
The era of out-hustling your competitors is over. In the AI era, time and capacity are no longer success limiters.
And the business implication is simple:
When everyone has the same robots, the strategist becomes king.
And THAT'S where you can stand out.
You cannot outwork your competition, but you can still outthink them.
Your creativity.
Your imagination.
Your ability to recognize non-obvious patterns.
Your empathy.
It's important to remember that the "AI" in "Generative AI" stands for "artificial intelligence". Indeed, until the robots become sentient and rise up, they are only as smart as we tell them to be.
Real strategy, rooted in real understanding of customer needs, with a heavy dose of human intuition. That's the new golden ticket.
So as you're thinking about your team, and even your own career, consider what you have and what you'll need.
For so long, we've hired mostly "doers" because winning was about efficiency of execution.
But now, the doing is commoditized.
The thinking? Not yet.

The Books Report
This new AI era, where the strategist is the king, is a turn. A curveball. An opportunity for a pivot.
And coincidentally, Steve McKee just published a fantastic book about how to capitalize on a changing business environment.
Here's what I wrote on the back cover of TURNS: Where Business is Won and Lost
"What a supremely interesting book. TURNS is a rollicking ride through history and modern times that illustrates why, how, and when to change course in business (and in life). It's a powerful combination of Gladwell-esque narrative mixed with a giant heaping of astute business insights. Bravo!"
It's so good, and has a 4.9+ rating on Amazon!
Jay's Faves
Wow! What a surprisingly delightful film.
Streaming on AppleTV+, Tetris is the incredible true story of the fight for the distribution rights of the world's favorite puzzle-based video game.
Soviet-era political machinations. Double-crosses. Underdog dreamers. This movie has it all.
And actor Taron Egerton is terrific, as always. Watch this one!
Excellent fresh take, Jay! Outthink them. Use our f###n' creativity. Our imagination. Our ability to recognize non-obvious patterns. Our empathy. Hell yes!

1yGreat article and POV. I've been playing with a few AI toys over the last month and am amazed. One task very useful task I've found is to give your assistant a list of ingredients you have on hand and ask it to come up with 3 recipes. In another scenario, my mom had a problem with her tenant who caused damage to her home which needed repairing, while other repairs were needed too. I suggested we use our AI assistant to write a non-threatening letter to come up with a compromise. It was perfect and took only seconds. I've been playing with Jasper (https://jasper.ai?special=tecjcOa), QuickWrite (https://www.quickwrite.ai/home-non-fiction/?orid=797703&opid=69), ChatGPT, and the newly enhanced Notion, which is much more than a generative AI assistant. With all of these tools, what matters is 'what you feed it." As the adage goes, garbage-in, garbage-out. The quality of your results will vary—a lot! After trying out several tools, using the same input on various tasks, I found QuickWrite does the best job for writing. I appreciate Notion's UI/UX, especially for short-form tasks, but it also performs well for long-form writing. While Jasper's templates can be a bit restrictive, its Chat beta has potential. I will check out Magai!

1yVery much enjoyed your take here. In the looming ocean of auto-generated media, the key will be to redefine signal amongst an even louder and more 'intimate," (coining a term from the recent AI Dillema talk) noise. Will dig in along the lines provided, thank you!

1yI can't help but wonder in the future if we will question whether someone is truly an expert or have they used AI to pretend they are. Will we question whether the content is original thought-leadership or will 'most' readers take the "I don't care" attitude...
