5 Tips for Career Transitioning

Imagine you are working in the job that is perfect for you because it highlights your strengths and provides growth opportunities to take you to new heights. Imagine the company you work for is in total alignment with your core values. Imagine your coworkers are supportive and truly work collaboratively to accomplish the goals of the company that are also in alignment with your personal goals. Imagine your upper management places high importance on mentoring and training so they have established safe spaces for employees to share concerns and ideas. 

Now, imagine you have nothing standing in your way. 

This doesn't have to be a dream.

Here are 5 tips to transition your career to the one that is best for you, even to start your own business. 

1. Start by researching the industry you’re interested in transitioning to. 
2. Develop a plan of action by considering what skills and experience you already have, and what you need to learn or do in order to gain the knowledge and experience necessary to transition into a new career.
3. Update your resume and portfolio to reflect the new industry. 
4. Network, network, network! 
5. Take courses or consider obtaining additional certifications.

I have worked with many who struggled with their career transition, not sure what steps to take. As we worked together, we covered the tips above digging deeper into each one. Little by little, step by step, they worked to find the best path for themselves.

The most amazing things happen when you are intentional with your approach to career transition. Your focus doesn’t get pulled away by those “shiny objects” that so often distract us. You begin to approach the career transition with excitement as the pieces begin to fall into place. 

Think of the tips as part of your journey. Just as if you were traveling in an unknown town, your trip might take you up and down the road, in and out of valleys, ultimately ending at your final delightful destination! 

Be willing to Invest in yourself which is a great way to increase your chances of making a successful transition.
