5 Reasons to Join a Startup

5 Reasons to Join a Startup

Before entering my current role I received an offer from a larger technology company. A recent conversation with a friend and former colleague of mine opened my eyes to just how grateful I am that I waited for the right offer to come along. In waiting, I found the perfect startup to grow with.

For anyone considering a startup position, here’s why you should take the risk:

1. More responsibility

In a startup everyone wears several hats. But it doesn’t have to be a “jack of all trades, master of none” situation. In fact, it’s the opposite for those hungry for success. You get the opportunity to partake, and even lead, exciting projects and undertakings that may not be directly related to the role you signed up for. A startup is not the place for a "not my job" type of person.

2. Opportunity for growth

More responsibility and higher expectations set the stage for more growth and professional development. If you ever leave the startup environment, your resume will be stronger for it. In a corporate role you’ll likely be stuck on the same tasks and find less opportunities to dabble in other areas of interest.

In less than a year I’ve learned six new sales and marketing platforms. I’ve learned more about business operations than I could’ve ever imagined. I’ve been forced to present publicly and overcome my fears around public speaking. Knowing that you are actually growing and learning each day is a reward in itself.

3. You can’t hide

You don’t sit in a corner cubicle somewhere pumping out deliverables until your annual review. You are constantly engaged by your peers and leaders. You get used to being held accountable, and you become better for it. Your work actually matters, and so do you.

4. You work with and learn from true innovators

Startups are typically led by highly successful, hands-on innovators with a taste for risk taking. Their innovative nature often means they are open to your ideas and suggestions. You’re encouraged to problem solve and generate ideas that can scale the company.

5. You have an incredible work atmosphere

Startups attract like-minded people. You’ll work alongside equally driven creators and risk takers. These people are hungry for success and want to see the company succeed as much as you do. They are as invested in that win as you are. If they’re not, they usually won’t last long.
