5 Podcasts for the Military to Civilian Career Transition

If you are transitioning within the next 2-3 years, now is an ideal time to start preparing. Gain access to valuable insights via industry experts, thought leaders, and successful professionals who share their experiences and knowledge. Listening to podcasts related to their desired field or industry, military personnel can gain valuable insights, learn about current trends, and stay updated on relevant topics.

These podcasts are specifically about the transition from the military to the civilian workforce include job search and networking strategies. But I also recommend listening to podcasts about your targeted industry which may require developing new skills or enhancing existing ones. Podcasts can provide access to educational content, including tips, strategies, and practical advice on your specific industry. Whether it's leadership, project management, entrepreneurship, or technical skills.

  1. Lessons Learned for Vets by Lori Norris

After speaking with Lori Norris personally, I can say that should be considered one of the top resources for the military-to-civilian transition. Every one of her episodes are focused on how to optimize your job search and career. It's tough to choose a favorite episode because there are so many great episodes.

Most of us know that transitioning from a military career to the civilian workforce can be challenging, and it's common to face uncertainties and obstacles along the way. I love how Lori shares both informational and inspirational stories of individuals who have successfully made similar transitions or overcome difficult situations.

2. The David Johnson Show

David Johnson is a former Army combat veteran now interviewing some of the top Military and Veteran minds in the country. Life-changing stories and documenting history.

Unfortunately, David Johnson hasn't recorded a new podcast since June 2022, but it's worth it to scroll through his past content for a wide range of podcasts.

3. The Career Confidante

Marie Zimenoff provides practical strategies in branding, career transition, advancement, job search, resumes, interviewing, and social media. Marie teaches you how to take charge of your own career trajectory. While there is a good deal of talk about this new reality, little tangible direction exists about how to thrive, not just survive, in this new workforce

Marie Zimenoff has extensive experience in the career coaching and human resources fields. She brings her expertise and knowledge to each episode, covering a wide range of topics related to career development, job search techniques, personal branding, networking, interview preparation, and more.

The "Career Confidante" podcast features interviews with industry professionals, career coaches, recruiters, and experts from various fields. These guests share their insights, tips, and experiences to provide listeners with practical advice and inspiration.

4. The Greg McKeown Podcast

Greg McKeown is the author of New York Times bestsellers "Effortless" and "Essentialism" and his mission is to help you advocate and negotiate your way to remarkable results without burning out.

Although McKeown only has one solid podcast about the military to civilian transition, he provides tangible productivity-focused information. His podcast has been ranked in the Top 5 of all Self Improvement podcasts (out of 11,000) and Top 10 in all Educational podcasts (out of 30,000) on Apple Podcasts.

5. Cammies 2 Khakis hosted by Bob Howard

Last, but not least, check out an up-and-coming podcast, I recently did an episode about How to Make a Resume the Civilian Employers Will Understand. In this episode I talk about how to transform your military resume into a resume easily understood in the civilian workforce. This is a podcast made by Veterans for Veterans. The three episodes so far are packed with essential knowledge for today’s veterans ranging from what to do in the months before your exit from the military, learning how to market yourself to land a new fulfilling career, and how to continue having a successful career and life.
