30 Seconds with Joanna Eyquem

As we approach our inaugural forum on May 3 & 4, we took time out to chat with some of our speakers. Joanna Eyquem PGeo. ENV SP. CWEM. CEnv., Managing Director of Climate-Resilient Infrastructure at Intact Centre on Climate Adaptation | Centre Intact d’adaptation au climat, will be making the case for nature-based solutions in climate adaptation. Here's a quick snapshot of Joanna's priorities, concerns and what keeps her motivated.

How long have you been working in climate adaptation?

I would say my whole career of over 20 years now! The terminology has changed (we didn’t call it climate adaptation all those years ago), but essentially all the work I have ever done, from flood risk management and river restoration to tackling extreme heat, has all been aimed at helping us manage natural hazards and making life better in a changing climate.

What’s your current passion project?

I am working hard to routinely recognize nature, and the services it contributes to people, in accounting and economic decision-making. I feel this is fundamental to making sound decisions for both nature and people going forward, tackling the climate and nature challenges together.

What are your thoughts on the National Adaptation Strategy?

An important point for me is that the National Adaptation Strategy calls for an all-of-society approach. Adaptation is not only a challenge for governments, it is a challenge for individuals, businesses and the financial sector. We need to work together, with more urgency, to accelerate adaptation actions on the ground.

What is your top climate concern for the Prairies?

Coming shortly after the UN 2023 Water Conference, I would say “water extremes” – while we often discuss flooding, drought is also of key concern for the Prairies. The southern Prairies is also on the front line of urban heat risk – cities like Winnipeg and Regina need to prepare.

What keeps you motivated?

I think greater positivity around adaptation is critical to drive action. I try to focus on all the ways we can make life better through adaptation in addition to reducing risk. And whenever I hear my work has been used to drive change, it gives me more energy to keep going!
