3 Tips for a Positive Online Educational Learning Experience.

For those wanting to make an impactful learning experience for your Online Educational learners here are 3 tips.

Note: Remember that online educational learning is different from the typical conventional in-person experience.

As we are now transitioning into a “Majority” online technical educational learning style it is important to understand your technology in such a way that you can maneuver seamlessly, and fluidly if a problem presents itself. This includes being proficient enough to lightly problem solve operating systems, and devices that a student may obtain.  Take time to understand how your programs and systems work together for the most pleasant experience. There should be no lag time, hard breaks, and moments of harsh learning distractions for the student. Have a checklist as every pilot should, and step through it as you would before takeoff. The checklist for myself is as follows:

  • Power - ensure all devices are powered to the maximum and have a stable power source you can connect to.
  • Content - over preparation for the lesson or task at hand. (Have information labeled and organized where it can be easily found).
  • Link / Portal acceptance. - Use the same portal entry method every time. (This will eliminate confusion and set the stage for future meeting experiences).

Just as we give instruction in briefing rooms or classrooms this should be held constant for the online experience as well. Ensuring that you are setting the stage for the learning environment is essential. Find a quiet space, with less chance of disturbance. Do NOT use a Hallway, lobby area, hanger, etc… Remember that the Fundamentals of Instruction apply to the student just as they do live in person. Note: If you can enable “Do Not Disturb” on your device I would recommend doing so. This will save you from not only distractions, but images, text, and phone calls that will break the learning environment.

It’s easy to lose track of time while teaching online. Set a reminder, have a clock and have the student remind you that you are coming up on the hour. Lessons should never extend over 60minutes without a break. Retention of the learner must have time to process the information in such a way that they do not become lost and or overwhelmed with the content. Someone just learning an intensive ground or flight lesson will need more time. As an educator over time, you will be able to grasp the intuition of your student and understand when the cutoff time is, and or if the content needs to be revisited, and or continued.

Here at CFI Bootcamp, we believe training is at the forefront of safety. We strive to educate and develop our students into decision-making pilots. With these 3 simple tips, you’ll be able to ensure that you are doing the most for your student when demonstrating a ground or flight lesson virtually.
