The 3 Most Anticipated Fully-Electric SUVs Coming Out in 2019!

The EV market has yet to bloom and 2019 could very well be the year of the electric car with some exciting new models coming out that are no more niche but universally appealing! The fastest growing segment - the one of the SUV, will welcome several fully-electric models. Here we count the top 3 most anticipated all-electric cross-overs to hit the road in 2019!

Would 2019 be the year of the electric SUV?

With 15+ new all-electric models coming out in 2019 this could really be the year of the electric car but some of the most anticipated electric cars of 2019 are in the cross-over segment. Could this mean that the electric car will finally become mainstream thanks to the electric SUVs? Let's check out the hottest electric SUVs that would be made available in 2019:

Audi e-tron SUV

The Audi e-tron SUV is going to production and will hit international markets in 2019. It would be Audi's first all-electric vehicle. The model will offer a 5.5 seconds 0-100 km/h acceleration with a top speed limited to 200 km/h. The 95 kWh battery would be able to provide a range of 400 km (based on the WLTP cycle used in Europe). Rapid charging with up to 150 kW will be supported allowing for 80% of the battery to be charged for about 30 minutes, at supported 150 kW DC charging stations.

Mercedes EQC

Ready to take on Tesla Model X, as well as Jaguar I-Pace and the upcoming Audi e-tron SUV, the Mercedes-Benz EQC is the luxury brand's first fully-electric model to enter series production. With 5 seats and a luggage space of 500 litres, the EQC would certainly count on its practicality as well as its luxurious interior, to convince buyers. The drivetrain consists of two motors - one powering the front and another powering the rear wheels. Top speed is limited to 180 km/h and the 0-100 km/h acceleration takes 5.1 seconds. The range is 400 km - the same as the one of the Audi e-tron SUV, however the EQC achieves this range with a slightly smaller battery of 90 kWh. The maximum charge power that the EQC would accept is 110 kW, which means a 40 minutes charge to get the battery from 10% to 80%.

Volvo XC40 Electric

Rather than building new electric-only models, Volvo has decided to introduce electric versions of its current models. The first one to get the all-electric treatment is the XC40 to be followed by the XC90. The fully-electric version will be joining the plug-in hybrid and we should expect only minor changes when it comes to the exterior and interior of the car. There is however no information on the drivetrain and battery yet, so we have to wait to see what range, top speed and acceleration the XC40 EV will offer.

The e-tron SUV, EQC and XC40 EV may be the newest models but there are already some very exciting and noteworthy competitors in the electric SUV segment.

Tesla Model X

The Model X has been on the market since 2015. It is anything but affordable but it is an amazing car not only terms of technology but also when it comes to design, practicality and performance. The range of the Model X depends on the trim you select and so does the performance. The lowest trim is the 60D with a range of about 320 km and 0-100 km/h for 6 seconds. The top trim is the 100D with a range of 465 km and a 0-100 km/h acceleration of 2.9 seconds.

Jaguar I-PACE

It's not an SUV, it's not a hatchback... Jaguar says the I-Pace is in a class of its own but of course it gets compared to the Model X a lot. It is however smaller and more affordable (but only compared to the Model X). The I-Pace has a range of about 380 km and would take you from 0 to 100 km/h for just 4.5 seconds. Its 90 kWh battery could be charged at a maximum power of 100 kW, which would translate into 40 minutes to charge from 0% up to 80%.

Hyundai Kona EV

The all-electric Kona is already a best-seller. It's a compact cross-over with a great range of 450+km and descent performance - 7.6 seconds to 100 km/h and a top speed of 168 km/h.

Kia e-Niro

The e-Niro launched in 2018 in Korea and has yet to be made available in international markets. It's slightly bigger than the Kona with similar range (450 km) and performance. It's an affordable cross-over and it would certainly be the choice for many first-time EV owners.

And even more all-electric SUVs are coming soon...

BMW iX3

The BMW iX3 is set to hit the roads in 2020 but BMW has already started accepting pre-orders in certain markets. The iX3 will be manufactured in China and exported to other markets. It is said to have 400 km range and a 70+ kWh battery pack capable to accept charging with up to 150 kW, which would make for a very short charging time.
