Message to Gen Y: Let’s Vote!
Election day is this Tuesday. The ads are on every channel. One candidate slandering another. It’s tiresome and repels many in our generation from voting. The system seems intangible and unapproachable. And for a generation that cares about impact, there appears to be little one can do. While many people in their twenties campaigned and advocated for a certain party or candidate, there is a large majority that has been quiet and has been observing candidates and elected officials in this midterm election. It’s that majority who’s voice needs to be heard.
Economist and Futurist Colleen Sharp characterizes Gen Y by authorship, autonomy and authenticity. This aligns with the common belief that our generation feels it can make a difference in substantial way. Furthermore, it provides some insight on why we should head to the polls on Tuesday.
- Authorship: Years ago, aging baby boomers thought of Gen Y as the “Me generation,” but this “spoiled and self centered” generation grew into adulthood understanding the global perspective and making an impact locally. We have created campaigns, companies and non-profits. We have volunteered, taught in failing schools, and created new ways of doing things. We have authored new technology, new systems and new ideas. Voting is authorship.
- Autonomy: The United States has seen a rise of registered independents in our generation. It appears that many are rejecting a two party controlled system, even as people lean to one side over the other. Our voting process allows one (regardless of registration) to vote for candidates in all parties, in order to elect the best individual for the job. The system allows us to show our independence and vote for the best candidate.
- Authenticity: Whether it’s a new product being advertised or an elected official to lead the country, Gen Y yearns for authenticity in interactions, products, and leadership. To change the country and bring more authenticity to our leaders, Gen Y needs to vote on Tuesday and encourage elected officials to stand for more than their party beliefs. This is how we bring authenticity back to the system.
Our generation can make the difference. Get Out and Vote on Tuesday!

10yWe voted early! All were baby boomers there! The townhall election staff will have to stand in line and feed the ballots 5 at a time thru the counting machines. High turn out for prevoting. Figure it will be a large number voting! Will be an interesting night of returns? Pl PHD

10yYes, Americans should vote. In many instances, the people who stay home are more than the number of votes for the winner. However, voting has new obstacles. Voter fraud is the justification of denying access to casting a vote. To stop (nearly nonexistent) in-person voter fraud, IDs are being required. For example, Tennessee decided to accept expired gun licenses but exclude current student IDs. This is because legislators believe student will vote for the wrong party. This past week, I learned about rejected people who appear on voter rolls in two states. The method to find matches is first and last names ONLY. False positives affect whites less than other groups. This would be illegal under the Voting Rights Act, Section 5. The Supreme Court overturned that section. Please read this article and vote, if you can. http://projects.aljazeera.com/2014/double-voters/
