15 - Growth Through Change: What I Learned from Pivots in Business
Have you ever wondered how to navigate the twists and turns of entrepreneurship while staying true to your core values? My journey has been filled with challenges, learning experiences, and opportunities to grow, both personally and professionally. From founding a branding agency to building platforms that support underrepresented communities, each decision I've made has been guided by a desire to create meaningful impact. Along the way, I've learned that growth often comes from embracing change, staying adaptable, and never losing sight of the purpose that drives you forward.
Understanding Core Strengths:
When I founded 3 Colours Rule - Award-Winning Creative Agency , I knew that my deep expertise in neuroscience and branding would be the cornerstone of our success. Creating the D.A.C. system and The Beyond Marketing Approach was about leveraging what I knew best. These systems not only differentiated us but also provided tangible results for our clients. My journey began with understanding my strengths and building on them—this foundation allowed me to expand confidently into new ventures.
Expanding Through Strategic Partnerships and New Markets:
After establishing 3 Colours Rule, I realised there was a need to support Black women in tech—a community that wasn’t being adequately represented. That’s when I founded GTA Black Women In Tech Black Women In Tech. By building on my existing networks and branding expertise, I created a platform that now serves thousands of women across Europe. This expansion wasn’t just about entering a new market; it was about fulfilling a greater purpose and connecting with a community that aligned with my values.
Pivoting with Purpose and Social Impact:
One of my proudest pivots was creating "The Voices In The Shadow" book series and the accompanying art collection to address colourism. This project allowed me to merge my business acumen with my passion for social justice. It wasn’t just about creating a product; it was about making a difference. When you pivot with a purpose that resonates deeply with you, the impact can be profound, both personally and professionally.
Investing in Talent and Education:
Through BLACK RISE , I’ve focused on bridging the gap between businesses and Black talent. I believe that investing in people is the most valuable thing you can do. Whether it’s through mentoring, teaching at institutions like Saïd Business School, or creating platforms for growth, my goal is to empower others. By helping others succeed, I’ve been able to expand my own influence and create a lasting legacy.
Adapting to Market Trends:
Staying relevant in today’s fast-paced world is crucial. My work as a brand advisor and international speaker keeps me at the forefront of emerging trends in tech and marketing. By continuously engaging with these trends, I ensure that my businesses remain forward-looking and innovative. Adaptability has been key to my success, and it’s something I actively cultivate.
Embracing Failure as a Learning Opportunity:
While I’ve had many successes, not every initiative has gone according to plan. However, I’ve learned to see failure as a stepping stone rather than a setback. Every challenge I’ve faced has taught me something valuable, and I use those lessons to refine my approach. The ability to learn and adapt has been crucial in my journey as an entrepreneur.
My entrepreneurial journey has taught me that growth often comes from a mix of understanding your strengths, taking calculated risks, and staying true to your purpose. I’ve been able to expand beyond my initial business by continuously learning, adapting, and investing in others. If there’s one piece of advice I’d give, it’s this: don’t be afraid to venture into new territories but always bring your core strengths and values with you.
