It's TI-IMEEE... for the penultimate newsletter of the year! 🎆 November was another busy month - we had Social Enterprise Day, watched some big Christmas campaigns, saw Bluesky emerge as a fresh face on the social scene, and talked about some important awareness days in the credit union sector. ✉️ So, here are a few notes on November! (And if you didn't get the Mariah reference, then you need to update your Christmas playlist.)

#GivingTuesday~Over a Decade After Launching~It Has Become a Year-Round Active Movement.🤲 Giving Tuesday is the annual culmination of everyday Americans finding ways to give back. The Tuesday that falls after Thanksgiving, Black Friday & Cyber Monday in November has become an occasion for millions to give in the years since 2012, when it started as #GivingTuesday on social media. An important thing for Americans to know about Giving Tuesday is, whether they give on Giving Tuesday or not, to not underestimate the power of every small generous action.~Giving on Giving Tuesday feels even better because you know you are part of something bigger than yourself." Now, each Giving Tuesday, email inboxes are flooded with asks from nonprofits, the Salvation Army unveils its giant red kettles in Manhattan & everyday folks in all corners of the U.S. give, whether from their wallets or from their busy schedules. The day bolsters resources for philanthropic groups & social service providers, which is important. "Giving Tuesday can be that point where we take stock of our giving capacity & our giving approach," said Steve Preston, CEO of Goodwill Industries International. “Giving can be an event, or just part of our lives," he said, adding that the day can be a unique opportunity for people to connect with causes, groups and with many communities that they are particularly passionate about. It allows people to say, 'What do I really care about? What does my community need? How can I locate an organization that can make a difference?'" he said. Giving Tuesday spreads joy to people who receive acts of kindness & those who give. "People who give are measurably happier & healthier," via scientific studies showing that giving freely can boost self-esteem & combat feelings of depression. The age-old adage is it's better to give than to receive, & we see that all the time," Preston said, referring to Goodwill's work funding job training opportunities for people in poverty, formerly incarcerated people, & for people struggling with addiction. "It changes us. It connects us to other people, it connects us to needs, it raises our consciousness," he said. Money isn’t needed to make an impact, as generosity comes in many forms, such as checking in on a neighbor or cooking a meal for a homebound or elderly person. Kindness, time & goods are all essential things to give that don't have to involve money. If you have a special area of expertise, like music, baking or tax-prep: being generous with your talents goes a very long way, Preston said. "I would encourage people to be bold. Find things that you really care about & that you know will make a difference," Preston said. Some useful tips for today's parents. Communicate and be realistic about the challenges faced by kids navigating the online space.
Is raising the age for social media the right answer? At the Alannah & Madeline Foundation, we believe raising the age alone is a red herring. In our recent article, our CEO, Sarah Davies, unpacks the issues surrounding raising the age of social media from 13 to 16 years old and the questions we should be asking. Read the article on our website to learn more about the recent debate and what you can do to help empower the children in your life to be safer online: https://lnkd.in/gjw9CBAs [Image description: one child is writing and the other is looking at their phone. YouTube, a platform that debuted in 2005, continues to reign as the most visited platform among teenagers. While Vine and MySpace have faded into obscurity, stalwarts like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok coexist with YouTube, which has shown consistent growth over the years. A pivotal moment in its history was the merger with Google in 2006, solidifying YouTube's position as the second most widely used search engine after Google itself. Unlike platforms that chase fleeting trends, YouTube maintains a steady trajectory, making it a reliable choice for the long haul. My bet is on YouTube's enduring appeal and unwavering performance. What I am quoted as saying here is heartbreaking, but true. I give talks to parents and teachers at independent, faith-based, and state schools around Australasia on general parenting ideas and strategies to help children become confident and capable, and the main questions asked by parents are often about problems with screens, over and over again. These parents are loving, educated and sensible, but many report extreme difficulty in managing their child's quickly-developed addiction to social media, once it is introduced. This can be to the point of a normally placid child becoming aggressive and even violent. To tell parents that they simply need to 'parent better' to manage their child's interactions on (and addictions to) social media is dismissive of the battle they face, particularly when most of their child's cohort are relying on social media as the main point of socialising, even though it is a false and ultimately unsatisfying - and often harmful - form of social connection. Additionally, the evidence is really clear that social media is not helpful for good wellbeing. The evidence is also really clear that it is not a reliable nor necessarily helpful source of mental health support. (see recent LinkedIn posts by Dr Danielle Einstein). The evidence is also clear that what we have tried has not worked (all that money spent on digital education and anti-cyber-bullying, and requests of social media platforms to monitor potential harm - and yet to what lasting effect?) We need to change these horrific newly-established norms of the child, tween and teen years as staring at a screen. It is time for a new solution and an under 16 ban might be a good first step to change norms.
No matter which poll you choose, the Albanese government's teen social media ban is very popular. Here's a few people explaining why they like the idea of the ban despite some of the concerns raised, https://lnkd.in/gcqBUFvU
