Now in its 8th year, it has become something of a tradition for me to kick off the En Primeur season with an article checking up on the goings on in Bordeaux, and to share news that should help us all to understand what vineyard or estate changes could have an impact on the final wines. It's always one of my favourite articles to write, providing a useful barometer and background for me also as I head into the crucial tastings of these in-barrel wines. Sometimes they are dramatic changes - owners who have passed away, for example (this year that includes Philippe Raoux and Stephen Adams), or châteaux sales that will see a drastic change of style (surely that will be the case with Cos Labory going to Cos d'Estournel). Other times it is new wines entirely - there are a few fresh faces round Bordeaux for the 2023 vintage, and you're going to see Entre deux Mers red wines for the first time - or anniversaries that will almost certainly mean special bottlings, such as 100 years of the Thienpont family at Vieux Château Certan. I recently came across an article about UK wines that truly fascinated me, and I wanted to share my learnings. UK wines are often referred to as the "sweet child of climate change." Since the 1950s, rising temperatures due to global warming have created a more favorable climate for winemaking in Southern England. The primary grapes used here are known as the "Holy Trinity": Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier, which are also the key varietals in Champagne production. Remarkably, blind tastings have shown that English sparkling wines can stand toe-to-toe with Champagne. In fact, one striking statistic revealed that 60% of French drinkers prefer English sparkling wine over Champagne! Some standout examples of UK wines include Nyetimber Classic Cuvée, Chapel Down Classic Brut, and Ridgeview Bloomsbury. 🍷 Would you like my top 90 wine choices? 🍷 I do love my wines. And they are not all expensive either. To me, a great wine is a wine that YOU LOVE. 🫵 It’s not about price at all. Some of my absolute favorite picks are $15 a bottle as a great dinner table wine. I want to share with you my list of wines that I have gathered over the last decade plus. These are my absolute favorites out of who knows how many. 😂 😇 Not in any order either. So here we go! Cono Sur 20 Barrels Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 Notes and a bit more about this wine! Most definitely a Cabernet Sauvignon with ample character and personality. This wine has a beautiful, concentrated ruby red coloring and intense aromas of plum, cassis and blueberries, which combine gracefully with softer earthy traces and end with hints of mocha and smoke. A full, complex and intense palate with persistence and an elegant finish. Great wine and it’s priced at around $29.99 depending on where you get it. I highly recommend this wine.
