A few general observations on UK Government Principles for Voluntary Carbon and Nature Market Integrity published by Ed Miliband and his team 3 days ago: 1)     It's short which is a good thing. Only 10 pages to read with straightforward calls to action for businesses to start or continue working on their sustainability and Net Zero goals.   2)     It deals with climate mitigation and nature restoration TOGETHER which is great to see! (Look on our website for a previous blog on this entitled: Climate change and nature – why do we have two COPs for one issue?) 3)     It highlights the importance of reducing emissions, then using the Voluntary Carbon Market to offset unavoidable carbon. 4)     It explains the importance of high integrity carbon and nature credits and how to recognise them - particularly through the application of a rigorous due diligence and risk management process. 5)     It covers standards (particularly the ICVCM and the VCMI) and how it is vital that only carbon offsets that align to these standards should be considered ‘high integrity’ and therefore trusted and purchased. 6)     It discusses the current size and projected growth of the Voluntary Carbon Market. To quote from the report: “The UK will likely need to more than double current capital investment levels in low-carbon sectors from £60 billion in 2023 to over £130 billion each year by the 2030s to achieve our Mission of accelerating to net zero.” And… how does this align with what we offer at Nature Broking? We are turning up the dial on quality and integrity in the VCM. The UK Government has set out its principles for Voluntary Carbon and Nature Market Integrity (#VCNMI) at #COP29. This is a signal of their intent to help raise the integrity of the market, ensuring it can be used to support domestic and global climate and nature goals.  This comes just hours after The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) has approved three REDD methodologies to achieve the #CCP stamp of integrity and quality... another sign of the carbon markets moving forward. Climate Impact Partners are looking forward to the public consultation in early 2025, which will help to shape a route forward for Government and how they can help raise integrity and ensure the #VCNM can continue to deliver immediate impact for climate, communities, and nature.    For now, their six key principles are a good starting block to build from and build off of a lot of the great work already at work in the market: 1️⃣ Use credits alongside ambitious action within value chains 2️⃣ Use high integrity credits (such as aligned with #CCPs) 3️⃣ Measure and disclose the planned use of credits as part of sustainability reporting 4️⃣ Plan ahead 5️⃣ Make accurate green claims using appropriate terminology (such as VCMI) 6️⃣ Co-operate with others to support the growth of high integrity markets If you are interested in learning more, check out the following link: https://lnkd.in/eQcM2qKM #CarbonMarkets #ClimateActionNow

Too little, too late. Do you remember Kyoto 1997? For climate policy, that was a big date, as the Kyoto Protocol was agreed. But only with a very late intervention by the US government, which insisted on 'flexibility' for Global North countries and companies to decarbonize. This 'flexibility' mechanism was supposed to be carbon trading. It never worked! The US, of course, infamously never ratified the Kyoto Protocol and never implemented a nationwide carbon market, never mind supported any global agreements to take climate change seriously. So, to understand Biden's current, renewed support for carbon market 'flexibility' has to be understood within this historical context. Yet again, this is far too little leadership for one of the main nations that is historically responsible for climate change. Carbon markets have never worked because they have largely followed the neoliberal ideology of letting the market sort out social and environmental problems. They very rarely do. The carbon market cannot fix itself. No market can fix itself. That fix instrument is called regulation. For a carbon market to work properly, you need very tight regulation; you need tough emission caps; you need to deal with bad apples in the market to avoid corruption; you need to have a very tight grip on the market mechanism and price signals. All of that has not happened - and is very unlikely to happen even with new lip service being paid to the principles of carbon markets. Waiting for carbon markets to sort out climate change is a complete waste of time. Global greenhouse gas emissions keep going up at an exponential rate (only the 2008 financial crisis and COVID have temporarily halted that upward trend). The concentration of carbon in the atmosphere is at an all-time high at 426 ppm (according to NASA). When I started my climate research, it was at 365 ppm. Let's stop fooling ourselves. 🌍 What do the EU Commission’s 2040 climate targets mean for sustainable investments?  📌 The Commission published its impact assessment for an intermediate goal on the path to net zero by 2050 and recommends a 90% net greenhouse gas reduction by 2040.   📌 To achieve this, an additional €660 billion (1.5% of the EU GDP) will need to be invested in the transition each year between 2031-2050. 🎯 To meet this target, the Commission highlights its willingness to achieve a comprehensive European approach on finance in the coming years, mobilising both private and public investments:  👉 The Commission will keep developing the EU #CapitalMarketsUnion with the aim of incentivising private investments in Europe.
