It's no secret that #mosquitoes can be a real nuisance. But beyond the annoyance, they pose a serious health threat, carrying diseases, some of which can be fatal. Yet, despite the harm they can cause, there's an undeniable fascination with understanding the behaviour of these blood-sucking pests.👇 🦟 Did you know mosquitoes are attracted to carbon dioxide, which we release when we exhale? That's why we often notice mosquitoes buzzing around our heads. Mosquitoes can sense carbon dioxide from 50 yards away, so it's hard to hide from them when we're outdoors. They're so good at it that they're even more likely to target pregnant women since they release more carbon dioxide. 💦 Mosquitoes Also Like Your Stink. They are attracted to the mix of sweat and bacteria, which means body odour and dried sweat are incredibly tempting scents for blood-thirsty insects. Mosquitoes carrying malaria are especially attracted to the smell of sweat. That is why we often get the most bites on our feet and ankles — smells from our feet tell mosquitoes they've discovered a prime meal location, so be sure to clean between your toes! 🩸 Some people seem more appetizing to mosquitoes than others, not just because of their sweet personalities! Research suggests mosquitoes may prefer specific blood types, with individuals with type O blood having an 83% higher likelihood of being bitten. While scientists are still exploring the exact reasons behind this attraction, they speculate that variations in body chemistry and certain chemicals in the blood may play a role. So, if you're constantly battling mosquito bites, blame it on your blood type! Rodents commonly invading human environments include: 1. House Mouse (Mus musculus): Small, agile, and prolific, they contaminate food and spread diseases like salmonella and hantavirus. 2. Norway Rat (Rattus norvegicus): Large and aggressive, known for burrowing and structural damage, they can spread leptospirosis and bubonic plague. 3. Roof Rat (Rattus rattus): Prefers high places like attics, they damage wiring and spread diseases like typhus. 4. Deer Mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus): Rural invaders known for spreading hantavirus, they seek warmth and food indoors. 5. Squirrels (Sciuridae family): Occasionally invade attics, causing damage and chewing electrical wires.
