Actively pursuing application of safety technology to marine environments

It amazes me, as an American, that we have to depend on a European giant like ZF to keep pushing the frontiers of automotive safety. I worked at an oem and tier 1 supplier primarily on safety systems and crash safety. We were always at the mercy of what party was into the White House. At the oem I remember the executives saying they would not sell a “safety neutral” airbag system. In the laboratory and in math models the airbag didn’t seem to give any net benefit over a seat belt. I’m a 95th percentile male and knew that in a 30 mph barrier equivalent crash, with just a good seat belt system, I’d be spitting out my pearly white teeth. Since a seat belt and seat belt plus airbag prevented that but gave the same HIC and chest G’s they were equal. Not to my teeth. When the Europeans started to sell airbags in the USA the tune changed and the OEM came kicking and screaming into the 21st century. When I was at the tier 1 and needed help from our aerospace division I would have to jump through hoops to get funding. I never understood any of this. At one time GM took some major steps and released a short run airbag system primay due the efforts of one executive, Mr Cole. After he moved on safety became less important.
