How does forming a personal connection with professors early on impact the learning experience for students at HCC? Economics instructor Renee Edwards offers her advice. “I advise students to get to know their professors as soon as they get on campus. I always encourage them to stop by during office hours and introduce themselves, even if it’s just to say hi. It’s important not to wait until they’re struggling with a test to make that connection. I believe that forming a personal connection with a professor makes learning easier. When I look at grades, I don’t just see names or numbers; I see individuals. At HCC, I see this personal interaction in the hallways all the time, reflecting our commitment to being there for our students. When students take the initiative to meet their professors, it creates a sense of accountability. It humanizes the educational experience and makes it more effective for everyone involved. When I go to class the next day after meeting a student, I’m more likely to look out for them and support them in their learning journey.” #HCC #HCCSouthwest #RealWorldEducation #WeAreHCC #studentlife #studentsuccess #education #highereducation #collegelife #learningskills #studytips #academicsuccess

The reason for developing an Acceptance Plan in a higher educational project is to set criteria and procedures by which the trainees coming in will be evaluated. It guarantees fairness and transparency, providing a framework for making admissions decisions in line with institutional values and priorities. It plays a role in recruiting diverse talent – including both student and faculty body – enhancement of the overall institution, strategic enrollment management, etc. An Acceptance Plan helps to maintain academic integrity and create a safe learning environment for every student by outlining clear criteria and accountability rules. #HigherEducation #Admissions #StudentSuccess #DiversityAndInclusion #EnrollmentManagement #Transparency #AcademicIntegrity #StrategicPlanning #EducationLeadership #FutureOfEducation #ProjectManagement #EducationManagement

"THE IMPORTANCE AND RELEVANCE OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN STUDENT DEVELOPMENT" by Kevin Ung, Ed.D. "As Christians, we are called towards excellence (Col. 3:23-24) working as the product of God’s workmanship (Eph. 2:10) to center our redemptive gifts and vocational calling. Thus, we cannot work with excellence if we’re not knowledgeable on current practices or understand today’s college students." #ACSDIdeas #ACSD2024 #Rest #HigherEducation #ChristianHigherEducation #StudentAffairs #StudentDevelopment #SAChat #ProfessionalDevelopment #ProfessionalGrowth

Quoting first author Dr Fiona Christie: "A striking aspect of this research into peer learning activities utilised to develop student employability was finding out how students reflected on interactions with peers and what they gained. This led us to theorise about this (using a graduate capitals lens), and write this article. The article has implications for practice and addresses the benefits of peer learning for employability but also recognises how students can sometimes be reluctant to engage." Thanks for the collaboration Dr Fiona Christie, Dr Maria Allen and Ciaran Burke.
Very happy to see our article An exploration of the impact of different peer learning activities utilised to develop student employability finally published open access. Thank you to my great co-authors Dr Maria Allen #ciaranburke and Rie Thomsen It is based on evaluative research of activities (group coaching and group work in simulated assessment centre) in employability learning. A striking aspect of the research was finding out how students reflected on interactions with peers and what they gained. This led us to theorise about this (using a graduate capitals lens), and write this article. The article has implications for practice and addresses the benefits of peer learning for employability but also recognises how students can sometimes be reluctant to engage. Thanks to Nick Dearden Helen Liddle Dr Helen Smith who were very important to the activities we evaluated. https://lnkd.in/ezUvEKU9 Centre for Decent Work and Productivity

Excited to share that a long awaited publication from a project I did KMb support for over 2 years (Accommodations to Include Students in Placement Sites). It took so long for the journal to finish its review process, so it's very exciting to see if live! Micropolitics in Participatory Processes: The Impact of Ablism and Other ‘Hidden’ Power Structures on Equitable Participation and Outcomes, In Planning Theory & Practice (Stephens, Epstein, Baljko, Smith) This work focused on accessibility in work integrated learning (aka. placements). This particular paper focuses on addressing unequal power in participation (between participants and facilitators).
