German bike share company nextbike nets 25% more rentals in the first half of 2024 compared to H1 last year. The firm’s 120,000 bikes have been ridden roughly 24 million times already this year. Now in over 300 locations in more than 20 countries, nextbike has been one of the pioneers of the mobility revolution helping establish bike sharing as a core component of public transport worldwide. Sebastian Popp, CEO of nextbike, told Zag Daily: “We are delighted to see that even after 20 years in the business, the demand for our offer has not changed. To the contrary, every year more people take to one of our bikes across Europe. Bike sharing as part of public infrastructure has become indispensable in thousands of cities and municipalities, and our business model proves to be more effective than ever.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/eUrDMtjM

🎊🚲 Our León bike share scheme is growing! As of last week, 40 new bicycles across 9 stations are complementing the public bike share scheme Alsa-nextbike León. With this expansion, the scheme consists of 340 bikes in total that can be rented and returned across the whole city. And as if this wasn't enough already, more than 80 brand new e-bikes will be joining the fleet in the coming month. This bike share scheme, implemented and operated on behalf of the public transport provider Alsa, has been providing a sustainable shared mobility option since 2022. With the expansion of the scheme and the addition of electric bicycles, we are sure that we will reach even more people in the future and will make public transport in León even more accessible and flexible. #BikeSharing #PublicTransport #Bikesharevolution #SustainableMobility

BREAKING Thomas Tuchel will not be around to use the new MVV bike share system 😞 At least Harry Kane will... Here are the top shared mobility tenders in February 2024 👇 5. Brussels 🇧🇪 As previously reported, Lime & Voi Technology have challenged the city’s selection process and will keep operating until their licences run out. Brussels will challenge this decision, as it means the tender they brought in to reduce scooters to a fleet 8,000 will have been unsuccessful. 4 companies will continue to operate, with around 14,000 vehicles in operation. However, there is another tender opening up in the city, and this is for ‘innovative’ shared mobility projects. There are 5 licences, each for 1,000 vehicles. 4. Amsterdam 🇳🇱 More uproar followed the Amsterdam tender for cargo bikes and mopeds. felyx, one of the pioneers of shared mobility in Amsterdam, was not selected for a licence to operate mopeds. GO Sharing and Check have each secured licences for 650 mopeds each, whilst BAQME has secured a licence for cargo bikes. The CEO of felyx has stated that this decision may be fatal for felyx. 3. Zaragoza 🇪🇸 Zaragoza have overhauled their shared mobility ecosystem. Find out exactly how in comments 2. Munich 🇩🇪 The Munich bike share tender is live documents can be found in premium newsletter 😉 1. Busto Arsizio 🇮🇹 A commune just north-west of Milan is preparing a shared bike and scooter scheme. ⏳ https://lnkd.in/eupQbXgh P.S. Super Tommy Tuchel, you're welcome back at Chelsea as soon as Todd leaves 🏆

The results of Bolt’s study are a powerful testament to how shared micro-mobility is reshaping urban transport. The fact that over half of scooter riders are more likely to switch from cars to public transport due to the availability of shared scooters highlights a significant behavioural shift toward sustainable, accessible mobility. #Micromobility #SustainableCities #UrbanTransport

The decision to take the train to #Tuscany to participate in L'Eroica this weekend was a considered one. Flying from Geneva to Florence was a non-starter. While I could have driven my #EV, I wanted to be able to read and catch up on tasks during the expected 7 or 8-hour journey. So #train it was, which ended up to be 3 different legs and a total of 12 hours because I have a #bike with me. Rail infrastructure for bikes can certainly improve. But I did notice a terrific addition in the bike racks on ItaliaRail.com that include charging for e-bikes. Clearly there’s demand. E-bikes are the fastest growth segment in the bike industry and manufacturers are all jumping in with new models tweaked to different emerging sub-segments like commuting, cargo, long-range adventure, performance, or MTB. This is bringing many new people into the #ebike market. The infrastructure is catching up. What may accelerate this could be effective cross-industry coalitions to educate policymakers, venue and transportation operators how to benefit from these investments. Good info on this here https://lnkd.in/df2jm44U If you know of any e-bike advocacy groups or organizations implementing e-bike infrastructure, drop a link in the comments. Making all these bikes is a little tricky from a #supplychain and #sustainability point-of-view, however. Manufacturers like Trek Bicycle are finding that the carbon footprint of producing an e-bike is up to 40% more than a non-electrified version. And they usually require establishing new supplier partnerships and putting the pressure on them to disclose accurate #Scope3 numbers. Not always easy but increasingly do-able. In absolute terms, however, the total footprint of producing a carbon fiber bike is about 220kg CO2e, or about the same as the flight I didn’t take.

“The majority of urban car trips are single occupancy: Why not shift a fraction of those solo drivers from individual cars, onto individual bikes? Berlin is a haven for integrated active transport options, with a well-developed network of bike lanes and paths that make commuting by bicycle both convenient and safe. Bicycles can effectively solve the “first/last mile” problem, which refers to the challenge of getting commuters from their homes to the nearest transit station and from the station to their final destination. Berlin boasts an extensive network of 620 kilometers of bike paths, including 150 kilometers of mandatory bicycle paths, 190 kilometers of off-road bicycle routes, and 60 kilometers of bike lanes on the roads. Protected Bike Lanes: To enhance safety, Berlin has been investing in protected bike lanes that separate cyclists from automobile traffic. These lanes are marked with green paint for better visibility. It helps tourists like me too. Cycle Superhighways: The city is planning to build around 100 kilometers of cycle superhighways to connect the suburbs to the city center, making it easier for long-distance commuters to travel by bike. Bike Parking: Safe and secure bike parking is a priority, with around 15,000 new bike stands installed since 2017 and more planned for the future. Cargo Bikes: Berlin offers rental of cargo bikes through the ‘fLotte kommunal’ program, providing a climate-friendly alternative to cars for transporting goods. Lime Bikes and Scooters: Lime offers both e-bikes, like the one i am riding, and e-scooters for rent in Berlin, providing a flexible and eco-friendly option for short-distance travel. Since their introduction in 2019, Lime has facilitated over 5 million trips in Berlin. Cycling in Berlin is not just a mode of transport; it’s a way of life. With continuous investments in cycling infrastructure, the city is making strides towards becoming even more bike-friendly, promoting sustainability and healthy living. if you would like to see how human centred design can lead to a dedicated bike area in Intercity trains, come visit me at InnoTrans. #InnoTrans2024 #Berlin #HumanFactors Louise Howard GAICD eMBA
