New episode of #DeconstructingComp available now! Rafael Gonzalez, Esq. and I really enjoyed this conversation as it touches on work we do day-to-day. We are so happy to bring you this episode featuring Dr. Crystal Cobos, Director of the Brain Injury and Concussion Clinic at Institutes Of Health and Anne McDonnell Advocacy and Affiliate Specialist for the Brain Injury Association of America and former Executive Director of the Brain Injury Association of Virginia. In this episode, we discuss the recent development announced in late July by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services: CMS now officially recognizes Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) as a chronic condition. According to the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA) this is a victory for the brain injury community. CMS has added TBI to its list of chronic conditions for chronic special needs plans (C-SNPs) through its Medicare Advantage program, effective for the January 2025 plan year. What does this mean for brain-injured employees and the workers' compensation community? Bottom line — we see this as a good thing. Tune in to hear what more these two experts have to say about it. Check the comments for where to listen to the episode and other relevant links. ¡Muchas Gracias! Thank you for listening. We would appreciate you sharing our podcast with your friends on social media. 🎧 A Must-Listen Podcast: The Dark Side of For-Profit Healthcare I highly recommend this recent episode of The Daily that exposes the devastating impact of privately owned healthcare systems on vulnerable people. Thousands are being locked into healthcare facilities, not for medical reasons, but for economic profit. This podcast sheds light on how the pressure for profit is leading to the detention of individuals, putting corporate gains over human well-being. It’s a sobering reminder of the urgent need for systemic change in how healthcare is managed. The tragic murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson has left many grappling with grief, anger, and frustration. It’s a stark reflection of the immense challenges within our healthcare system—a system that too often leaves patients feeling powerless, providers burned out, and outcomes misaligned with the care we all deserve. While violence is never the answer, the frustration many feel is deeply valid. Our system prioritizes profits over outcomes, volume over value, and in doing so, it fails the most vulnerable among us. This anger is a symptom of a broken system—one that urgently needs change. But change won’t come from complacency. It will come from those who channel their frustration into action: the advocates for value-based care, the entrepreneurs challenging the status quo, and the policymakers and providers fighting for equity and compassion. Their work is more critical than ever. Let’s honor this tragedy by acknowledging the pain caused by our broken system and committing to fix it. To everyone working to realign healthcare with humanity—you are needed, and your work matters. Let’s build a system that truly serves patients and caregivers alike. #HealthcareReform #ValueBasedCare #PatientsOverProfits #ChangeMakers

Happy Monday! Here’s what we are tracking today at HealthLeaders. Provider discontent with #MedicareAdvantage is approaching the breaking point. Sanford Health is the latest provider to file divorce papers with the privately run Part C payers, joining other high-profile systems, including Scripps Health, Memorial Hermann Health System, and St. Charles Health System. Why the discontent? Mostly it's low reimbursement, rising denials, and red tape. Sanford Health's decision signals a shift in how healthcare systems may--or may not--do business with MA plans in 2025 (https://lnkd.in/erZG6PMw). In fact, a new survey from Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) shows that 16% of systems are planning to stop accepting one or more MA plans in the next two years; 45% said they are considering the same but have not made a final decision, and; 62% of #CFOs believe collecting from MA is "significantly more difficult" than it was two years ago. Do you agree? I don’t see it getting better. Also today, Henry Ford Health and Ascension are on the verge of launching their combined organization (https://lnkd.in/ec8_h9W5). The #jointventure, which was revealed nearly a year ago, is set to close the end of this month and get under way on October 1, bringing eight hospitals and an addiction treatment facility under the #HenryFord name. The move has been described as a joint venture rather than a merger by both hospital operators, with no cash being exchanged as part of the deal. We are also gearing up for next week’s #CMO HealthLeaders Exchange. From discussions on #physicianwellness and burnout to the role of technology in the clinical enterprise, it will be a busy event. Stay tuned for coverage from our CMO editor Chris Cheney. Thanks for reading and enjoy the week!

Illinois’ new Medicaid demonstration program that supports facilities that provide comprehensive, around-the-clock behavioral healthcare and substance abuse treatment is set to begin in October. [Health News Illinois] Kristine Herman, chief of the behavioral health bureau at the Department of Healthcare and Family Services, told members of the Medicaid Advisory Committee that they are working on a “robust communication and technical assistance strategy” to ensure all participating clinics can begin offering the necessary services by Oct. 1. [Health News Illinois] The initial 19 mental health and substance use treatment providers in the demonstration program must provide care coordination, 24/7 access to crisis services and serve all patients, regardless of their ability to pay. “These agencies will serve anyone who comes through their doors, regardless of the individual's insurance status, and they're going to ensure that these individuals have access to a very broad array of mental health, substance use, recovery, and physical health screening services, as well as referrals and coordination with any other services that the individual may need,” Herman said. Seeking care for mental health can be a daunting experience. Between the long wait times and the struggle to find providers that take insurance, the U.S. behavioral healthcare system does not make it easy for patients to receive the care they need. In the latest episode of ‘The Modern Patient Experience,’ clinical psychiatrist Dr. Joshua Israel outlines three ways to fix this ineffective system. 1️⃣ Higher reimbursement rates 2️⃣ Expansion of the training pipeline for behavioral physicians 3️⃣ Streamlined integration into primary care offices Listen to the episode: https://lnkd.in/e_zGnXJE #patientexperience #mentalhealth #healthcare #patientfinancing
