Regarding cities somewhat relevant hazards are listed but the main risk is missing. Namely the hazard of immune mediated diseases, which is actually being realized EVERY day. Luckily it can be mitigated by adding the missing biodiversity by using e.g. composted forest industry side streams. Given the last few years of extreme weather affecting KZN, starting with the severe coastal storm surge in 2007/8 followed by some warm dry years (drought conditions in Richards Bay around 2015), the extreme flooding and rainfall events in 2022/23 to tornados and extreme rainfall storms in 2024, the recommendations in this infographic are crucial to ensure lives and livelihoods are not continually impacted upon or worse yet, lost. Protection of our ecological infrastructure (forests, wetlands, grasslands) should be our primary goal to ensure sustainable development in KZN. Not only should the natural assets be set aside and managed, but they should also be buffered to ensure the ecosystem services are maintained. Landowners and homeowners associations need to be investing in their ecological infrastructure. It is no longer a nice-to-have, or "in an ideal world" scenario. Further, it is enshrined in our environmental law to apply the precautionary principle and to uphold the duty of care.
