Good tips for walking.
October is Pedestrian Safety Month In 2022, across the United States, there were 7,522 pedestrian fatalities. In Georgia alone, there were 342. As a traffic engineer with an emphasis in safety these statistics are way too high and we all need to do our part to reach the ultimate goal of zero. The graphic below outlines some tips to remember as a pedestrian. As a motorist, it is also important to drive alert and be aware of the presence of pedestrians at all times particularly in school zones and downtown areas. High visibility traffic enforcement combined with public outreach and education can reduce the dangerous driving behaviors that are all too commonplace on our roads. A new study from the Behavioral Traffic Safety Cooperative Research Program finds that “all of the HVE campaign studies showed positive impacts in the metrics evaluated.” This includes reductions in drunk driving crashes and deaths, increases in seat belt use, less cell phone use while driving and fewer pedestrian crashes. The report also provides four frameworks that agencies can use to evaluate and improve their campaigns. National Work Zone Awareness Week kicks off next week and this year’s theme is "Work Zones are temporary. Actions behind the wheel can last forever.” What many fail to recognize is that the vast majority of people killed in work zone crashes are motorists and their passengers. In 2021, 778 drivers and their passengers died in work zones (based on NHTSA FARS data), making it all the more important for drivers to slow down and stay focused while approaching and passing through a roadway work zone. For all my contacts working to save lives in rural communities… check out this resource from my colleagues at NHTSA! We can improve crash prevention as well as the critical EMS and 911 systems that respond to save before, during and after the crash in these communities! Does your 911 system have the resources they need to impact all 5 aspects of the safe system approach? Is your EMS leveraging best practices to save additional lives? Are you doing something innovative that others should know about? Together we can move towards zero deaths on our roadways!
At National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NHTSA, we just released resources for rural communities to improve road safety. This is a fantastic resource with ideas to improve safety outcomes in rural America. Fatal crashes on rural roads are overrepresented in the crash data--about half of the fatalities on the roads in the US occur on rural roads despite only 20% of the people living there. Thank you to the team who worked on this document. https://lnkd.in/egvu3AjH
