This is a *very exciting* improvement in women's healthcare! Too many people I know fear pelvic exams for the emotional and physical discomfort caused by them. Additionally, many people, especially those in rural areas, have challenges accessing routine medical care. "According to the American Cancer Society, about half of new cervical cancer cases are diagnosed in people that have never been screened while about 10% are found in people who have not been tested as often as recommended." The new self-collection offerings from BD and Roche could have a huge impact for making women's healthcare more accessible and reducing cervical cancer cases. https://lnkd.in/ehMmNPZH

📃Scientific paper: Acceptability and Preference for Human Papillomavirus Self-Sampling among Thai Women attending National Cancer Institute Abstract: BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer screening is an important public health strategy to reduce cervical cancer incidence and mortality. Human papillomavirus (HPV) self-sampling is the alternative method that can potentially increase participation in cervical cancer screening. This study aimed to evaluate the acceptability of HPV self-sampling as a primary cervical cancer screening among Thai women. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted at National Cancer Institute, Thailand, between March and September 2021. Eligible women were invited to collect their own samples with a vaginal cotton swab for cervical screening. The data on demographics, acceptability, and preference for HPV self-sampling were collected via a self-administered questionnaire. A Likert scale was used to assess the response of self-sampling acceptability. The multivariable logistic regression determined factors that influence preference for HPV self-sampling. RESULTS: A total of 265 participants were recruited. Over 70% agreed that self-sampling was easy, less embarrassing, and not painful. They also felt confident in their ability to self-sample correctly and would recommend this method to a friend or relative. For their next screening round, 66.4% preferred self-sampling whereas 33.6% preferred clinician-collected samples as routine screening. The factors that influence preference for self-sampling were age, marital status, feeling less embarrassed, and confidence in performing the tests. CON... Cervical cancer remains a significant health concern globally, particularly in regions with limited access to screening and treatment. Recent research conducted in India has demonstrated the efficacy of a single session of combined screening and treatment for HPV in reducing the incidence and mortality of cervical cancer among women aged over 30. The study implemented HPV testing followed by immediate treatment for HPV-positive cases using cryotherapy or LEEP. The results were striking, with a 50% reduction in both the incidence and mortality of cervical cancer among women in this age group. These findings align with WHO recommendations for targeted screening efforts in women aged 30–39. These results have profound clinical implications. They underscore the importance of comprehensive cervical cancer prevention programs that integrate HPV testing with immediate treatment for positive cases. By prioritizing early detection and intervention, healthcare providers can significantly impact the burden of cervical cancer. In conclusion, the study provides compelling evidence of the effectiveness of combined screening and treatment for HPV in reducing the burden of cervical cancer among women over 30. Implementation of these strategies can lead to significant improvements in outcomes and reduce mortality associated with cervical cancer. Hey Connections!! I am here to share some informations about cervical cancer. Cervical cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer death among females worldwide and its behavior epidemiologically likes a venereal disease of low infectiousness. Early age at first intercourse and multiple sexual partners have been shown to exert strong effects on risk. The wide differences in the incidence among different countries also influenced by the introduction of screening. Although the general picture remains one of decreasing incidence and mortality, there are signs of an increasing cervical cancer risk probably due to changes in sexual behavior. Smoking and human papillomavirus (HPV) 16/18 are currently important issues in a concept of multifactorial, stepwise carcinogenesis at the cervix uteri. Therefore, society-based preventive and control measures, screening activities and HPV vaccination are recommended. Cervical cancer screening methods have evolved from cell morphology observation to molecular testing. High-risk HPV genotyping and liquid-based cytology are common methods which have been widely recommended and used worldwide. In future, accurate, cheap, fast and easy-to-use methods would be more popular. Artificial intelligence also shows to be promising in cervical cancer screening by integrating image recognition with big data technology. Meanwhile, China has achieved numerous breakthroughs in cervical cancer prevention and control which could be a great demonstration for other developing and resource-limited areas. #snsinstitutions #snsdesignthinking #designthinkers

A recent study led by King's College London has shown that self-sampling HPV kits could enable over 1 million more women in England to participate in cervical cancer screening over the next three years. This innovation not only makes cervical screening more accessible but also targets under-screened women, particularly from underserved communities. Offering convenience, choice, and empowering women to take control of their health, self-sampling HPV tests could dramatically boost screening rates and save lives. The YouScreen trial demonstrated that mailing kits directly to women’s homes or offering them at GP practices could make a big impact in increasing participation. As healthcare continues to evolve, it's essential that we explore solutions like this that can make a real difference in women's health and help in the early detection of cervical cancer. BD just shared some exciting news that has the potential to change the health care landscape in the U.S. for women and for people with a cervix. The FDA has recently approved the self-collection of vaginal samples for HPV testing in a health care setting using the BD Onclarity™ system. HPV is recognized as the primary cause of almost all cases of cervical cancer. The American Cancer Society in the U.S. recommends HPV testing as the preferred method of screening. This groundbreaking approval paves the way for a more private testing option, potentially enhancing accessibility for those who encounter obstacles to cervical cancer screening. These barriers can range from physical and geographical challenges to social or religious considerations, or any other factors that may complicate a pelvic examination for sample collection by a health care provider. This is a significant stride forward in our ongoing efforts to ensure health care is inclusive and accessible to all. #cervicalcancer #womenshealth #publichealth https://lnkd.in/eSmHcgGC

Why cervical cancer is still a top killer in Singapore? Do you know that cervical cancer remains one of the most common cancers in women in Singapore. According to the Singapore Cancer Registry Annual Report 2021 (released in 2023), cervical cancer is the 10th most common cancer and the 10th leading cause of cancer death for women in Singapore. And about four Singapore women are diagnosed with cervical cancer every week. Cervical cancer can have a devastating impact on a woman’s life as many are often starting families, have young children or are reaching the peak of their careers, when the disease hits. Treatment may be painful, expensive and affect the patient’s fertility. While majority of women aged 25 - 74 were aware of the pap smear test (89.9 per cent) and more than half were aware of the HPV test (54.6 per cent), yet only 43.1 per cent of these women reported having gone for cervical cancer screening. At KKH, five-year survival rate for cervical cancer in Stage 1 is about 80 - 90 per cent, Stage 2 is 60 - 70 per cent, Stage 3 is 60 per cent, and Stage 4 is 20 per cent. But not hope is lose as cervical cancer is preventable and easily screened for. I’m sure you would agree that some protection is better than no protection. I invite you to explore how the different package could be tailored to fit your financial budget while ensuring that you are protected from unforeseen circumstances. Additionally, we offer free regular health screening - not just for cervical cancer but for other female-related illnesses. As a financial consultant, your health is our priority.
