☕️ Here's an entry from the Small Batches library: "Everything, Everywhere, All at Once". From Wiring the Winning Organization (2023): Teams were no longer able to solve Layer 1 (the work) problems because they were too mired in Layer 3 (organizational circuitry) problems—communicating and coordinating to get even small things done. This is because the smallest coherent unit at Amazon became all the software engineers at Amazon, where in development or operations. Every engineer had to talk to every other engineer because everything was coupled together, depriving everyone of the ability to act independently of each other. Among virtually all tech companies, Amazon is the most notorious for having the hardest senior promotion, going from L5 (SDE 2) to L6 (SDE 3). It's so bad that around 65% of Amazon's engineering base is stuck at L5, and many engineers burn out and leave the company because of this. Diving into case studies from engineers who have succeeded in the promotion is therefore, extremely valuable. #computing staff should encouage teams to be patient and supportive so everyone expresses their ideas and opinions. Software engineering team projects are unlikely to be 'completed' in the time available. All of the ones that I set are open-ended. Like Amazon, or Facebook, they are never 'done'. As a result, the team can be steady in development, and support their team members as they learn to use the new languages, tools, or whatever for development. It doesn't matter if they don't add 'one more feature'. When the goal of the team collaboration is to learn to work together as a team, then slowing down to help team members makes lots of sense. Conservation X is having a contest for high-tech solutions for the Amazonian bioeconomy, one that would replace the old economy that causes deforestation and is extractive. This is not an idea for a biologic or synbio product, but I still do think, as I have said before, that there should be a forest-to-world digital marketplace for all regenerative zero-deforestation products that come out of the Amazon. Maybe hey 👋 Cornell Tech you could make a platform. Not that I know what I’m talking about, but I could see all such community benefiting commodities maybe sold on their own commodities market or trade floor. The bio economy stock exchange floor! Imagine! But maybe it would be a matching website? Still it would be cool if you could buy 100$ worth of stock in a orchid scent ingredient used in a Gucci perfume that you know (by scent) is trending in Brooklyn or, more likely, (know by algorithm) a bum spray trending on Tick Tock. Looking at you SEPHORA !!
