Similar to most competitive industries with ever increasing targets and pressures, the aviation industry has always been a bellwether for global trends. We've weathered storms of volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity (VUCA). However, the landscape has evolved. We're now facing a world that's Brittle, Anxious, Nonlinear, and Incomprehensible (BANI). What does this mean for airlines? Brittle: Disruptions, from geopolitical events to natural disasters, can have far-reaching consequences. Anxious: Passengers and employees alike are concerned about safety, health, and economic stability. Nonlinear: The pace of change is rapid and unpredictable, making traditional planning challenging. To thrive in this BANI world, airlines must: Build resilience: Invest in robust contingency plans and crisis management strategies. Foster empathy: Prioritize passenger and employee well-being, offering support and understanding. Embrace agility: Adapt quickly to changing conditions, such as shifts in travel demand or regulatory requirements. Invest in innovation: Explore new technologies and business models to drive efficiency and customer satisfaction. What drives people to work throughout hardship is aspiration. Rex Airlines is in trouble. Another regional airline into voluntary administration. It does seem like the Australian regional airline game is quite the challenging place to operate. It looks to me like an opportunity for 2024. You know, VUCA world … Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous. And the thing that goes with living in VUCA world – Innovation. ‘Cos the next new regional airline that comes along – and one will – really needs to get innovative and do it differently. Because the current model is clearly not working, and we all know what the definition of insanity is. No doubt, the airlines that have fallen by the way have all given the Innovation idea a really good try (in their mind, at least). But no-one has hit on the right formula yet. And it appears to be a problem worldwide. I have no proposal here… just that the airline world goes around in circles, failing every time to establish a sustainable regional model. The opportunities for the right innovator are huge. Innovation and pushing the envelope are the thing in 2024.
