This Nutraceutical Registration and Regulations in the UK (MHRA) are discussed in below points. Health Authority: The regulation and registration of nutraceuticals in the UK fall under the authority of the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). With their pivotal role, the MHRA is responsible for safeguarding the safety, quality, and effectiveness of nutraceutical products. Legal Representation: In the UK, manufacturers and importers of nutraceutical products must choose a legal representative based in the country. This representative plays a crucial role as a point of contact for regulatory authorities and takes responsibility for ensuring compliance with regulations. Product Classification: Nutraceutical products are classified into distinct categories depending on their purpose and composition. The primary categories consist of food supplements and traditional herbal medicinal products: Food Supplements are specifically formulated to complement regular dietary intake. They typically contain nutrients or other substances that offer nutritional or physiological effects. Common examples encompass vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and specific botanical extracts. Traditional Herbal Medicinal Products pertain to herbal-based remedies that make medicinal claims and are deemed suitable for addressing minor ailments. These products fall under the regulations imposed on medicinal effects due to their aforementioned therapeutic claims. You can not un-ring a bell – An assessment of Government panel to review if nutraceuticals should be brought under apex drug regulator CDSCO. Way forward: respective authorities are expected to meet on and off mode in this year to assess the impact. I see the possibility of their assessment in following criterions for them 1. Market size of Nutraceuticals/ Dietary supplement category. 2. Complexity of regulatory system/ ministry/ departments 3. Overlapping probabilities/ labels/ lic. Of manufacturing units/ standards (monographs)/ testing etc. 4. RDA/ RDI implications vs Sch V of D&C act 5. Sch V implications vs RDA FSSAI 6. probable controlling authorities. Existing or new 7. Current examples of which regulatory authority is/ are controlling Nutra segment in the world. Food or Pharma Impact: 1. based on the current practice of CDSCO, all importers need to register them self for every site & every product before import in India. Till today, food authority do not require to register each imported products or each foreign manufacturing sites*. Just other then some sensitive categories like meant/ fish egg/ nutra and their products manufacturer. Registration cost with CDSCO is very high i.e. USD 15000 (include one products in it) for three years. Renewal is mandatory for site and products after every three years. FSSAI just charge Rs 50,000 (not USD) just for one time. 2. registration requirements under Drugs are stringent with respect to SMF, DMF, GMP, analysis per batch, GDP etc.; if comparing with food category. That enhances the cost of production in the last. My assumptions & conclusions: 1. I see its coming and will be implemented in near future. Food industry players and FSSAI are not equipped academically to control it. CDSCO have 70% chances to become incharge for Nutraceuticals. IPC/ IP will become nodal reference like USP NF (like monographs of NF and general chapters) and controlling. It will impact major nutraceutical products*, Vitamins, minerals, ingredients, additives, herbal ingredients and by their monographs. To retain this thriving sector, food industry have to push a lot in advocacy. 2. implementation will take many years from now. My assumptions is that implementation will not see the light of gazette notification before 2026 or so. 3. as a bad guess; in any case, Committee will not allow FSSAI to take import/ production/ sale in hand for products which are using vitamin/ minerals more ten 1x RDA or claiming DRR (Disease reduction) or DR claims. They will own FSDS/ FSMP category by them self. I assume chances are 100 % for these two categories of Nutraceuticals. xxxxxx xxxxxxx xxxxxxxxx For More Detailed Analysis follow attached pdf.

Attended the ongoing Vitafoods India 2024 conference in Mumbai. Got some great insights into the growing Indian nutraceuticals/health supplements industry. Especially liked the sessions regarding the emerging consumer trends in India with the focus shifting towards personalized nutritional supplements, healthy ageing and novel nutraceutical formulations aiding the ease of absorption. The panel discussion on the evolving FSSAI regulations governing the nutraceutical industry was thought provoking and productive. India’s nutraceutical market was worth an estimated $4 billion in 2020, but has seen a phenomenal growth over the past few years, reaching $6.1 billion in 2023. With the Indian nutraceutical industry aspiring to reach a $100 billion market size, I believe that this industry is at an inflection point and the opportunity is there for the taking for stakeholders spanning across the entire value chain, right from the farmers who are engaged in the cultivation of medicinal herbs/plants, active ingredients manufacturers, contract manufacturers of finished nutraceutical formulations and companies marketing their own brands of nutraceutical products/health supplements. #vitafoodsindia2024 #vitafoodsindia #Vitafoods #nutraceuticals #nutritionscience
