How will REGENT’s full-scale seaglider prototype reshape regional coastal travel? REGENT Craft has entered the hardware and systems integration phase for its full-scale Viceroy seaglider prototype, marking significant progress toward realizing seaglider travel. Set for sea trials later this year, the Viceroy will be the world’s first passenger-carrying seaglider, validated by extensive on-water testing. CEO Billy Thalheimer expressed excitement about witnessing the prototype in action, highlighting the company's rapid pace in electric mobility. After conceptualizing the seaglider in 2020, REGENT conducted hundreds of hours of tests on a quarter-scale model. Now, with support from digital twin technology, REGENT’s full-scale prototype is being prepared for tests across floating, foiling, and flying modes. CTO Michael Klinker noted the engineering team’s expertise as pivotal in bringing the seaglider prototype to life. With over 600 orders valued at $9 billion, and approval from the U.S. Coast Guard for testing, REGENT is poised to meet growing global demand for sustainable coastal travel. Last night I watched a fascinating documentary/advert about the "Icon of the Seas," a new breed of mega-sized cruise ship that blends remarkable naval engineering with an impressive focus on customer experience and facilities. Though I've never considered myself a cruise person (as many aren't until they try it), it's clear that some passengers are avid cruisers, going on multiple trips a year. One thing that stood out to me, however, is the carbon footprint associated with these ships. While the "Icon of the Seas" runs on LPG instead of diesel and features energy recovery systems, it raises an interesting question: Is the economic benefit, and customer experience, of such cruises worth the environmental cost? Carbon footprint figures are difficult to obtain but a Friends of the Earth report estimates 421.43kg of CO2 per day, equates to 5.9 tonnes CO2, for 2 people on a 7 night cruise. I'm curious to hear thoughts on balancing sustainability with these incredible travel experiences.

The research vessel RV Flip is the only vessel in the world capable of shifting from horizontal to vertical position in the middle of the ocean. Flip is not a small ship, it is about 108 meters long and weighs 700 tons. Engineers designed it to be able to move to a vertical position with 90 degrees straight, so that the front of the ship at the top is 17 meters high (i.e. a 5-storey building high) while at the bottom is submerged 91 meters long, i.e. that most of the ship is submerged underwater. Which helps the ship's stability and resistance to waves, the transformation process takes about 30 minutes, in which the seawater is pumped into huge tanks in the back of the ship, which makes it sink into the water to become the ship in a vertical position, and this ship is considered one of the most important ships in the field of scientific research of seas and oceans. #researchvessel #RVFlip #info #fact #Didyouknow #tourism #travel #traveling #travelling #transportation #SuperSoul #didyouknowfacts

Today we joined another eight organisations to strongly condemn the Government's attempt to change the Ħal Far Local Plan so as to allow the construction of an airstrip for model aircraft in Wied Żnuber. The secret agreement for this airstrip was reached in February 2022 between three government agencies and the Ħal Far Model Flying Association, which allocated public land for a miniature airstrip for model aeroplanes occupying 17,000 square metres. The structure will not only gobble up natural land but also introduce constant noise and light pollution, impacting a much larger Natura 2000 site and posing a threat to the local ecosystem, which includes a nearby shearwater colony. As the Government opened the second phase of the consultation process aiming at changing the Local Plan so that a so-called "low impact sports" be permitted in the area, yesterday the Kunsill Lokali Birżebbuġa and Għaqda Storja u Kultura Birżebbuġa announced they have now collected over 1,000 objections to proposed amendments to the local plans that would pave the way for the project.
