The Managing Director, Asia of World Shipping Council, Ken Chia, delivered his great speech with the theme of Innovative strategies for driving the transition to net-zero and to increased safety for shipping at LINKING - Development of Featured Maritime Services. From the perspective of industry association,Kenneth analysed the trends and challenges of decarbonization in the shipping industry. “The maritime industry is at a pivotal moment. To achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, we must adopt innovative strategies that ensure green fuels become competitive and secure investments in fuel production. Simultaneously, we must prioritize safety by addressing the improper declaration of dangerous goods and implementing robust safety protocols. By working together, we can drive the transition to a sustainable and safe future for shipping. Let us seize this opportunity to lead the industry towards a brighter, greener, and safer tomorrow”. Sincere thanks to Kenneth Chia and World Shipping Council for joing us last week in Ningbo, China. #shipping #marine #maritime #green #dcarbonization #fuel #safe #China #Silk #Road

"Charting a Greener Course: COSCO Unveils Green Water 01, China's Electric Marvel of the Seas" The Green Water 01, the largest river-to-sea electric container ship ever launched, represents a groundbreaking achievement by COSCO Shipping, a Chinese state-owned enterprise. Weighing over 10,000 tons, this vessel redefines clean energy transportation. Measuring 119.8 meters in length, 23.6 meters in width, and 9 meters in depth, the Green Water 01 sets numerous industry records, including its size, container capacity, deadweight tonnage (exceeding 10,000 tons), and battery capacity surpassing 50,000 kWh. Powered by a substantial battery, the ship can adapt its energy consumption according to the length of its voyages. COSCO can augment its range by adding extra battery modules, each providing 1,600 kWh of electricity. With 24 battery boxes installed, the Green Water 01 can utilize 80,000 kWh of energy, equivalent to saving approximately 15 tons of fuel typically consumed by a conventional container ship on a similar journey. As stated by Captain Wang Jun, the Green Water 01 can reduce fuel consumption by about 3,900 kg (8,600 pounds) for every 100 nautical miles traveled, resulting in a carbon dioxide emissions reduction of 12.4 tons. With its successful inauguration, the Green Water 01 now operates a weekly service between Shanghai and Nanjing, representing a significant stride in sustainable shipping practices. #China #containership #COSCO #electric #sea

In 2023, China secured its position as the second top importing country worldwide, just behind Mexico. The environmental impact of a single 20ft container journey from Shanghai to Elizabeth, NJ, USA necessitates the planting of 480 trees to neutralize carbon emissions. To provide context, many vessels carrying cargo to the US can hold 15,000 TEU or more, emphasizing the substantial carbon footprint of international trade. Although there are currently no federal carbon regulations directly impacting US businesses, the surge in emissions highlights the mounting expenses linked to logistics and global trade due to climate change. How many containers has your company imported from Shanghai to NJ, and what measures are being implemented to reduce your carbon footprint? Are there established protocols in place to monitor and minimize carbon emissions? #ClimateChange #BusinessImpact

How to learn something new every day 💪 => focus on getting information into our heads. 👉 Red Sea shipping diversions spew carbon emissions equal to 9 million cars " While significant, the extra emissions are a fraction of what the shipping industry – which carries 80 per cent of world trade – spews into the atmosphere each year. The sector’s global regulator, the International Maritime Organisation, is working on the world’s first global carbon levy, though it is not set to come into force until 2027. Meanwhile, the planet continues to warm." Lara Arago’s article explains well one of the current disruptions facing shipping: Lower use of the Suez and Panama canals are severely impacting global supply chains, increasing port congestions, longing times at sea, and adding to transport costs and cargo delivery times all over the world. But there is one more thing. Together, all these disruptions also add to increasing emissions and maritime pollution. Not only are ships sailing longer distances, consuming more oil for transport. We also need more of them when they spend more time on the waters. This calls for even faster action to change maritime transport! Better energy efficiency regulations and more use of low emission fuels are essential! Do you yourself know if YOUR company is using high or low emission transport services? If not, start asking to find out and to take action.
Did you know that marine traffic is experiencing one of its most significant disruptions, and it could impact you?
