I'm excited to share that #SINTEF and I are part of the newly granted Horizon project, GEOSYN: "Geothermal Synergy: Enhancing Industrial Energy Efficiency through Steam Heat Pumps and Heat-Powered Cooling Systems." The goal of GEOSYN is to validate a cutting-edge geothermal steam heat pump, combined with heat-powered refrigeration systems, for industrial use. This system taps into heat from deep or shallow geothermal sources and prioritizes sustainability by using water as the working fluid throughout.
One of the project’s key objectives is to improve cost-efficiency and boost geothermal energy use, even in areas without large geothermal reservoirs. The technology can adapt to various scenarios by connecting to thermal energy storage, and can work with different heat sources, including geothermal and waste heat, at varying temperatures.
Beyond the technical innovations, GEOSYN also aims to increase public awareness and engage policymakers to support geothermal energy at local, regional, and national levels. The project will showcase the affordability and reliability of geothermal solutions for industrial processes, helping to build trust in this clean energy technology.
The GEOSYN project is coordinated by #APRE (Agenzia per la Promozione della Ricerca Europea) and brings together 10 organizations from 5 European countries (Italy, Denmark, France, Norway, and Ukraine), with expertise ranging from technological development to social science, reflecting different stages of geothermal energy maturity across Europe.
