Generative AI is reshaping the workforce as we know it, ushering in a wave of opportunities and challenges for educators and policymakers alike. In the latest edition of NFTE Nexus, we delve into the pivotal juncture of policy and generative AI to revolutionize K-12 education. Check out the brief below!

AI is evil... At least that's what we've been taught. Yesterday, I had the opportunity to speak with the administrators, teachers, parents, and fellow student leaders at Mountain House High School to discuss AI usage at school and how we can approach it in school policy. The previous iteration of the policy almost directly ruled out the usage of AI, deeming it a form of cheating. As a tech-savvy student myself, I found myself vouching for AI. More than 50% of my school takes at least one AP course. From that 50%, most take multiple AP courses. That's a lot of pressure! Students often give in to this temptation and start a cycle of using AI unethically to get the weight off their shoulders. But this is not how teachers think. AI shouldn't replace the mind. It should enhance it. It should assist the mind. Teachers at MHHS are increasingly incorporating new technologies in ways such as providing specific prompts that can guide students' learning process. Creating policy around AI and its ethical usage is difficult-- at any given moment, an innovation can be made, creating possibilities for both dishonesty AND growth. My select peers and I gave our perspectives with rigorous schedules, but also got to hear from our teachers, parent body, and admin. Together, we framed our school policy and are continuing to help build an environment where AI can empower, not hinder, student minds. And remembering, AI should enhance, not replace, the personal connections in teaching. 💡 The digital divide is real - if AI is to benefit all students, we need to address access issues head-on. 💡 Ethical implications, like data privacy and fairness, must stay front and centre as AI becomes more embedded in education. 🤩 It’s an exciting time for schools, but we need a solid approach to harness AI’s potential. The UK's first "teacherless class," which uses artificial intelligence in place of human teachers, is set to begin soon. David Game College, a private school in London, will launch its first “teacherless class” for 20 GCSE students in September. While AI has the potential to revolutionise education by providing personalised learning experiences and freeing up resources, the idea of a teacherless classroom raises important questions. Human teachers offer empathy, adaptability, and the ability to understand the nuances of a student's needs—qualities that AI may struggle to replicate. It will be interesting to see if this approach can truly match the depth and effectiveness of traditional teaching methods or if it serves as a complement to the invaluable role that human educators play.
