𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐀𝐈 + 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 From my experience, the resource 'The Writing Revolution' or the 'Hochman Method' is one of the most effective methodologies when teaching writing and grammar in context. A key strength is using the content knowledge students are already learning to explicitly teach them writing. For overworked teachers, the biggest problem with this approach is the time it takes to plan. To teach writing/grammar in context means that you can't just find a generic worksheet, grammar book or slideshow. The writing activities need to match the specific content you are covering in class, e.g. class novel in English; Historical event; Scientific concept, etc. This is when #GenerativeAI can super charge your planning. Below is an example Generative AI prompt. The aim is to teach students how to effectively use subordinating conjunctions. The context is the novel 'The Giver' by Lois Lowry. "Could you please write me some dependent clauses with a subordinating conjunction using the Hochman Method. Use the novel 'The Giver' by Lois Lowry as inspiration for the content of the activity." This is an example of what you get from your AI assistant: 1. Although Jonas had never experienced it before, 2. Before the community adopted Sameness, 3. Since receiving his life assignment, 4. While Jonas was learning about the true nature of his society, 5. As the memories began to change Jonas, 6. After Jonas discovered what happened during release, 7. Because feelings and colours were new to him, 8. If everyone could see colours, 9. Even though Jonas felt isolated from his friends and family, 10. Whenever Jonas shared a memory with Gabriel, Students then use their knowledge of the novel to practice adding a relevant independent clause to complete the sentence. #TeacherdirectedAI #ChatGPT #AIeducation

From Blank Page to Draft - How to effectively use AI for academic writing: Recently, a friend told me how writing her MSc thesis was the worst experience of her life—no writing process, no structure. Now, I’m facing the same challenge: a 10,000-word draft due in a few weeks. But this time, I’m using AI to make it faster and more efficient. Here’s my 5-step AI-driven workflow: 1. Visualize Your Sources I use Obsidian's Canvas feature to make a mindmap of papers I read. It helps me to find topics and relevant studies much quicker as I write. 2. Brainstorm with ChatGPT Start with 3-4 informal sentences you want to state in your introduction/discussion. Then, prompt ChatGPT to: a. “Give me 10 reasons for [your topic]” b. “Expand each into three bullet points.” This gives you building block sentences to work with. Most of them won't be great but there will also be a few really great ones. 3. Generate Citable Sentences with Perplexity Go to Perplexity . ai and prompt it with: - “Give me 20 facts on [your topic].” This generates sentences with a reference that you can use in your paper. Double-check the source, but in my experience, it is pretty on point most of the time. 4. Refine Your Draft After gathering content, filter out 95% of the AI-generated ideas, keeping only the best to build your introduction. It’s about quality over quantity. 5. Iterate and Improve The final draft still requires critical thinking and human refinement. But you will have saved hours of time if you follow this workflow. AI won’t write your paper for you, but it will save you time and energy. Want to learn how to use AI for academic writing? It can also help improve vocabulary and sentence clarity, making your writing more polished and professional. 2. Quilbot: Quilbot is an AI-powered writing assistant that can help you paraphrase text, summarize content, and even check for plagiarism. 3. Otter.ai: Otter.ai uses AI to transcribe speech in real-time, allowing you to focus on understanding the material rather than frantically writing everything down. Duolingo: Learning a new language can be challenging, but AI-powered language learning apps like Duolingo can make the process more engaging and effective. 5. Jasper: This AI-powered brainstorming tools can help students overcome writer's block and generate new ideas for essays, research papers, or creative projects. Jasper allows you to input a brief description of your topic and then generate creative text formats, content, and ideas. Remember, AI tools are meant to supplement your learning, not replace it. The way I have started to explain it is that LLMs, by definition, are probability machines. They are analyzing billions of lines of text and providing you with the most common next word or sentence. In other words, what you are getting is the average of all the writing humanity has committed to the subject, If "average" is your goal then ChatGPT is the right tool.
Last week, I posted Kurt Vonnegut's letter on the importance of practising art as a way of becoming - for all people, not just those who call themselves artists. The post reached and touched a lot of people. If engaging with arts - be it poetry, painting or music - is about BECOMING, then engaging with writing is about THINKING and developing OWN VOICE. We learn to sort thoughts through writing them, then re-writing, revising and refining, even more so if we do it by hand. As Victoria Livingstone notes, this demands being "willing to sit with the temporary discomfort of not knowing." In a world full of uncertainties, this is tough - I know. We are at the cusp of an immense intergenerational divide between those who have learnt how to think by engaging with writing, and those who are learning how to think through engaging with all sorts of digital technologies, including LLMs. The fundamental difference between these two generations is that one has an experience of life before the internet, and the other one doesn't. What does that mean for how the people of the future will become and think? https://lnkd.in/edSTaQch #ai #chatgpt #llm
