Now that my new book has gone for print, I can tidy up and get rid of some of the old versions. I always do this; I leave it until I know I don’t need them any more. I found this version. It’s one of the “page proofs.” It’s when the book is technically finished and has gone through editing. Publishers then ‘typeset’ it. It’s when the author first sees how it would look on a book page; the font style, spacing, etc. At this point, I always spot stuff that I want to change or fix, things I missed when I viewed it on my laptop screen in Microsoft Word. Because it feels different now it’s on an actual page. These are what the yellow post-its are. I place them on every page that I’ve changed something on. I then send these changes back to my internal editor, who makes the changes. Iterations like these can happen a few times. My publisher (Hay House) is so supportive and patient. I did three or four iterations this time (I forget exactly - it was a blur); thankfully my internal editor, Grace, is a patient person as you’re not really supposed to make as many changes as I did. I just wanted to get it right. This book is so important to me and it’s taken months of work, not only to get the content right, but to make the writing style match the title. It’s a style I’ve not used all that much before, except in some of my blogs. I had to write the book is a more quirky and lighter tone that fitted with the expectations that such a title produce. Balanced, of course, with fascinating science and some honest and heartfelt stories. The book is out on 9th July 2024, but anyone who pre-orders is gets an online “Kindfulness” course (containing 4 lessons and 5 meditations). Here’s a page on my website with info about the book, how to pre-order, and how to access the Kindfulness course: https://lnkd.in/eCh2BsKU

Don’t Make Me Think This book has been so eye-opening! While many of the concepts are old, they are still widely used in building modern websites. I see them all the time, but reading this book has helped me articulate the hidden knowledge I’ve had but couldn’t quite put into words. Sometimes, I would just think, "It’s not visually appealing," without fully understanding why. But now, the book has given me the language and insight to identify and explain these design principles. Here are some notes I took (visual): Decided to share the notes I made while reading "Don’t Make Me Think."

Thinking About Self-Publishing Your Book? Here's What You Need to Know Self-publishing is an incredible journey that puts you in control of your creative vision. However, there’s a lot to consider to ensure your book stands out in a crowded market. Here are my top tips for first-time self-publishers: 1️⃣ Invest in Professional Design A well-designed cover and interior layout are crucial. Readers do judge books by their covers! 2️⃣ Edit, Edit, Edit Even the best stories need a polished finish. Hiring a professional editor can make all the difference. 3️⃣ Choose the Right Print and Distribution Options Decide whether to go print-on-demand, digital-only, or a mix. Research platforms like Amazon KDP, IngramSpark, and others to find what suits your goals. 4️⃣ Set Realistic Goals Define your purpose: Are you looking to share your story with a niche audience or reach a broad market? 5️⃣ Market Like a Pro Your book won’t sell itself. Build a presence on social media, connect with your audience, and consider reaching out to local media or bookstores. Self-publishing gives you the freedom to create something truly your own, but it’s worth investing time and effort in getting it right. If you’d like guidance or support in producing a professional-quality book, I’m here to help! 📚 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐂𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤 𝐕𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐬 In the vast sea of book design, where many companies prioritize efficiency and use a one-size-fits-all approach, I've always charted a different course. As an award-winning book designer with over two decades of experience in the indie publishing community, my compass is guided by one north star; which is the story behind your book. The magic of a book cover lies not just in its visual appeal, but in its ability to engage readers before the first page is turned. Yet, many book design companies barely get past the title because the take minimal information from the authors. This often leads to a mismatch with a cover that tells a different tale than the one within its pages. That's why I work closely with authors and encourage them to share their visions with me. I believe it's imperative to dive deep into the essence of their message, to understand not just the story they've written, but their goals and aspirations for it. I create several design options and then collaborate closely with the author to make adjustments to get it just right. This approach allows us to create a cover that truly represents the heart and soul of the book and also stands out in the marketplace. Over the years, I've had the honor of bringing many stories to life, each project a testament to the power of listening, understanding, and translating an author's vision into design. If you're entering the world of indie publishing and seeking a book design that embodies your story's essence, let’s connect! 📩 Let's make your story visually unforgettable. Please message me with any questions. #BookDesign #IndiePublishing #Collaboration #Storytelling #VisualNarrative #DesignTrends

🤔 How Much Does It Cost to Design a Book Cover? 💸 A book cover design is something you can’t imagine the publishing process without. Unlike traditional publishing, indie authors have several options to get one, which differ in price. So, how much does it cost to design a book cover in 2024? DIY book cover design – $0-$262 Book cover design by freelancer – $15-$100 Book cover design by a company – $300-700, or even up to $2,000. Premade book cover design – $100-$150. Each book cover design option has pros and cons. Using DIY tools is the cheapest, but it takes a lot of time and effort. You’ll need to analyze your genre and audience carefully to make it appealing to readers. On the other hand, hiring a professional designer can be costly, but it ensures that your cover meets reader expectations and grabs attention. Which option do you usually choose? My Writing Journey Continues: The Art of Book Cover Design 📚🎨 Today, I want to share a crucial part of my writing journey that I never expected to be so complex: creating the book cover. Key insights from my experience: 1. Inspiration can strike anywhere: My initial idea came from a journal cover that María Camila Guzmán gave me. Always keep your eyes open! 2. Collaboration is key: I'm working with my talented friend Meher Khan and my publisher Daybreak Press Kate Sadeghpour to bring the vision to life. 3. Simplicity is deceptively difficult: I wanted a clean design with icons representing the book's topics. Sounds easy, right? Not quite! 4. It's a process: We're still refining the cover. Patience and persistence are essential. 5. The cover's importance can't be overstated: I initially underestimated its significance, but it's often the first thing that catches a potential reader's eye. Advice for fellow authors: • Start thinking about your cover early • Be open to input from design professionals • Don't rush the process - it's worth taking the time to get it right • Remember that your cover is a crucial marketing tool Have you designed a book cover? What was your experience like? Share your thoughts below! #BookCoverDesign #AuthorJourney #WritingCommunity #SelfPublishing
