Watching Usher’s Concert has shown me one thing... Now when most people go to events, most like to enjoy the experience as a casual fan.. But fortunately and unfortunately my mind doesn’t work that way. I’m a systems and operations guy, and I love to be positioned in places I can see as much of the backend as possible… As I’m always looking for lessons I can take back to my own firm.. I’ve been to 2 shows one one Vegas and last night in Dallas .. 3 years apart. Vegas was more of a VIP, backstage kinda of soirée… Dallas was purposely to the side where I can see all of the show backstage switching, the band, background singers.. and even his show managers moving the show along.. Do you know how many dancers, DJs, background singers, artists, producers, light guys, stage managers, and tour managers he’s been through over the years? But even with new people stepping in, he can deliver the same high-quality show every single time. You know what that shows? That he’s built systems. Most people think success hinges on having the “perfect” team. But the reality is, when you create solid systems and processes, the team becomes adaptable and interchangeable. If Usher’s success depended solely on individual talents, every time a dancer, DJ, or manager left, his performance would suffer. But it doesn’t. Why? Because he has a blueprint that’s documented, repeatable, and fine-tuned to deliver excellence no matter who’s in place. The takeaway is this: Don’t just build a team—build a system that runs the team. The same principle applies in business. Whether it’s leadership, operations, or project management, a well-oiled system minimizes disruptions and ensures continuity. Your people will always change—whether they leave, grow, or get replaced. But your results don’t have to fluctuate if you have a process they can plug into. So the real question for anyone running a business or leading a team is: Do you have a system, or are you just relying on talent alone? Because when talent changes, only systems keep the quality intact. Soap operas were initially produced for radio in the 30s by soap brands looking to reach and entertain their key demographic: housewives/ husbands. Has the industry come full circle?
