Work with Purpose’s Post

I hope the new UK government embraces collaboration, for example with the useful work Mission Zero Coalition, led by Chris Skidmore, have been doing: To achieve a net zero energy grid, 5 conditions need to be developed: 1 - A balanced supply and demand (including the tech [AI, forecasting, storage], demand & market management, and grid management of the different sources of renewables from large and micro-scale grids to build flexibility and responsiveness into the system) 2 - Create an attractive investment environment and clear financial frameworks (including consistent and secure policy decision-making, regulatory and tax instruments to set the direction of travel, stable debt markets, guidance on corporate contract mechanisms, and customer engagement at massive scale for market uptake) 3 - Create an efficient (resourced) and democratic planning process (to reduce planning and grid connection delays, scaled-up public engagement, and that barriers in the planning system to initiatives such as micro-grids/passive/LE house building/self building etc are removed) 4 - Ensure a sufficient flow of skilled and specialised workers (hopefully also leveraging regulatory frameworks such as PPN06, industrial strategy, and education strategy to do this) 5 - Create a data-driven and digitalised energy system (including leveraging standardisation of data and reporting systems e.g. ESOS, SECR reporting etc) I suggest a 6th: significant consideration is also needed towards our approach to how we manage our land and decisions we make for how it is 'allocated'. Existing (and increasing, given climate change) significant stresses on land use (e.g., agricultural, green belt and biodiversity, housing, industrial, renewable power spaces etc) means setting our sustainable balance of how much we will be reliant on other countries for what (decisions on the levels of reliance we can have for what % of food and energy is responsibly imported, or responsible off-shoring industrial etc), and what that means in the global political and climate change context and the long term risk and opportunities from that (especially given the recent past alienation of our neighbours by our politicians). What is left for energy security & sustainability in-country and how that is best utilised by building better political relationships with our neighbours and countries we will still need to source from?
