I hope the new UK government embraces collaboration, for example with the useful work Mission Zero Coalition, led by Chris Skidmore, have been doing: To achieve a net zero energy grid, 5 conditions need to be developed: 1 - A balanced supply and demand (including the tech [AI, forecasting, storage], demand & market management, and grid management of the different sources of renewables from large and micro-scale grids to build flexibility and responsiveness into the system) 2 - Create an attractive investment environment and clear financial frameworks (including consistent and secure policy decision-making, regulatory and tax instruments to set the direction of travel, stable debt markets, guidance on corporate contract mechanisms, and customer engagement at massive scale for market uptake) 3 - Create an efficient (resourced) and democratic planning process (to reduce planning and grid connection delays, scaled-up public engagement, and that barriers in the planning system to initiatives such as micro-grids/passive/LE house building/self building etc are removed) 4 - Ensure a sufficient flow of skilled and specialised workers (hopefully also leveraging regulatory frameworks such as PPN06, industrial strategy, and education strategy to do this) 5 - Create a data-driven and digitalised energy system (including leveraging standardisation of data and reporting systems e.g. ESOS, SECR reporting etc) I suggest a 6th: significant consideration is also needed towards our approach to how we manage our land and decisions we make for how it is 'allocated'. Existing (and increasing, given climate change) significant stresses on land use (e.g., agricultural, green belt and biodiversity, housing, industrial, renewable power spaces etc) means setting our sustainable balance of how much we will be reliant on other countries for what (decisions on the levels of reliance we can have for what % of food and energy is responsibly imported, or responsible off-shoring industrial etc), and what that means in the global political and climate change context and the long term risk and opportunities from that (especially given the recent past alienation of our neighbours by our politicians). What is left for energy security & sustainability in-country and how that is best utilised by building better political relationships with our neighbours and countries we will still need to source from?

High-Integrity Carbon Credits to Accelerate Clean Energy Transition in Developing Economies : The Energy Transition Accelerator (ETA) Initiative Energy Transition Accelerator (ETA), is a groundbreaking initiative that's forging a powerful alliance between governments and private sector leaders. This innovative partnership is designed to unlock a surge of private capital, empowering developing countries to achieve their clean energy goals and build a more sustainable future. The ETA is a collaborative effort between the U.S. Department of State, the Bezos Earth Fund, and The Rockefeller Foundation. It establishes an innovative sectoral-scale carbon crediting standard, enabling developing nations to generate high-quality credits to finance their shift from fossil fuels to clean power. Here are some key highlights: Addressing the Funding Gap: The ETA has the potential to generate tens of billions of dollars in transition finance by 2035, closing the significant funding gap for clean energy investment in developing economies. Scaling Up Clean Energy Transition: The initiative focuses on accelerating the transition from fossil fuels to clean power, keeping the 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement within reach. Ensuring Equitable Transition: The ETA prioritizes a just transition, ensuring benefits for local communities alongside environmental gains. High- Integrity Standards: The emphasis on high-integrity carbon credits fosters trust and transparency in the carbon market. This initiative is a significant step forward in tackling climate change and achieving a sustainable energy future. The Center for Climate and Energy Solutions (C2ES) will serve as the ETA's secretariat, and former Secretary of State John Kerry will chair the newly established Senior Consultative Group. #climatechange #renewableenergy #sustainabledevelopment #ETA #carboncredits #climatefinance #globaldevelopment #energytransition #justtransition #partnershipsforgood #COP28

Really interesting in-depth piece in the FT this week, looking at why major corporate brands are either failing to meet their recently set #climate targets or moving away from these targets all together. As with everything to do with the #netzero transition, there is no single answer to what is going on. There is a degree to which some corporates failed to carefully think about their implementation plans to deliver their targets when these were first set. However, there are also broader public policy reasons which explain why it has been more difficult for some of these businesses to meet their targets. Lack of planning reforms which are slowing major clean energy projects, the absence of adequate revenue certainty mechanisms for many new low carbon technologies, and a lack of demand side measures to grow consumer appetite for clean technologies, have all contributed to difficult market conditions for companies to invest to meet their targets. In a major year of elections around the world, this is an important time for policy makers to take note. You can read more here: https://lnkd.in/gwsZdb_N

Interesting to hear about the 'asks' of the next Govt. from Mission Net Zero. Their latest report, Pathways to a Net Zero Future outlines not just the urgency, but the need for the next Govt. to start acting with purpose and at pace. The evidence, pathways and key steps are already clearly set out from over a decade of work in this area. Time to do, they say. https://lnkd.in/eJxznsP2
