I was asked how I start every brief. I felt a bit silly saying, “I don’t know.” I mean, I do know, but it slightly varies. Client to client. Brief to brief. For me, there isn’t always a rigid process in which I follow (the luxury of running your own ship). Although it got me thinking - what is my common pattern? And then I remembered a How&How video (love their work). Simply discussing, what's the big idea? They insist on starting with conversations and words on a page. No visuals, just words. Hearing how clients describe their business in detail, what they think it is and what they hope it could be is the most useful starting point. From there, everything starts to flow and the direction takes shape. But it can change based on the clients needs. I’d love to hear how other designers approach new projects. Do you work in a bespoke way based on client demands? Or do you stick by the same process each time? Ps: Here’s a shot from a recent workshop I did with my sidekick Liam Turner - 4 hours of nothing but words and sticky notes.

In all the discussions around #ClientAcquisition, there's one crucial aspect that often gets overlooked: the importance of setting #boundaries. As service providers, especially in #design and #sustainability, we encounter clients who expect a lot of freebies but don't always realize the immense amounts of time, effort, and creativity that goes into every process – from structural design and conceptualisation to sampling and execution. We've all been there. A potential client reaches out, eager for our insights and expertise. We dive in, investing hours into understanding their needs, brainstorming solutions, and preparing detailed proposals. But then, when it comes time to discuss costs, they vanish. It can be disheartening to see hours of hard work and dedication go unrecognised and unrewarded. It's a tricky balance. Dont get me wrong: We want to demonstrate our capabilities and build #trust, but there's a fine line between being generous and being taken advantage of. For us, this often translates to 4-5 hours spent on each initial requirement, only for the client to disappear when the conversation turns to payment. So, how do we navigate this? How do we set boundaries without jeopardizing potential relationships? I believe it's about clear communication and mutual respect. It's essential to establish expectations from the start, outlining what is free and what requires investment. This not only protects our time and #resources but also sets a professional tone for the #collaboration. Design consultations, samples, key line drawings, structure designs, artwork changes, 3D renders – the list of "freebies" clients expect are endless. I'm curious to know if any of you have faced similar #challenges? How have you gone about setting boundaries and ensuring your efforts are valued? Are clients willing to pay for services they think they are entitled to?

By not leveraging professional videos, construction and remodeling design-build businesses are missing critical opportunities to demonstrate their value, engage with clients on a deeper level, and ultimately grow their business in a competitive market. Visual Demonstration of Expertise Without professional videos, businesses fail to showcase their craftsmanship, design skills visually, and completed projects. Potential clients are left with only verbal descriptions or static images, which may not fully convey the quality and complexity of their work. Clients are more likely to choose a competitor who can provide a visual portfolio of their work, leading to a potential loss of business.

We have an ongoing creative goal as a studio to create "world-class" work, but what does that mean? Well, I'd define world-class as competing alongside the very best examples in that category on a global scale, and it's become one of our benchmarks of success. Why is this a valuable goal? Firstly, it removes all limitations of budget, what competitors are doing, which industries are "suitable" for high-quality creative work, personal expectations, and it opens the door to a new measurement of success. Every brief that lands in your inbox is an opportunity to create world-class work, and it's your challenge to make it happen. We are Beyond Creative in our delivery and work. Designing and creating everything you need to lift your business to new levels. Unlike most creative design companies we don't restrict ourselves by conforming to classic trends and business management...We create the new ones. Instead of following what others are doing in the hope you are successful, why not create your own iconic brand, material, software and services that make you a cut above the rest in your field by serving you business how it should be, not how it was designed to help another! Our director Karl Maisey has been driving his creative development through business for years, to develop a new level of support for new and existing clients. It isn't just about what has been created by another that we need to follow, it's time to create new curves and waves that you follow to a place you are going, instead of where others have been. #beyondcreative #creativeservices #design #sme #smallbusinesses #corporatebusiness #wearebeyondcreative #contactus #freeassessment
