Low prices in Michigan have created a marijuana retail market that rivals the one in California, the largest regulated cannabis market in the world. The average retail price for an ounce of flower in Michigan has plunged more than 80% since adult-use sales started. The average price for an ounce of flower was $80.14 in August 2024, according to data from Michigan’s Cannabis Regulatory Agency (CRA), down 84.5% from $516.21 per ounce in December 2019. Why Don’t We See State-Mandated Minimums for Cannabis Pricing? For alcohol and other industries, price floors exist to prevent race-to-the-bottom pricing or undercutting. So, why doesn't it exist in cannabis? Some possibilities: States want to encourage market competition. They’re concerned about pushing consumers to black market. NEWS: "Curaleaf joins marijuana multistate operators pivoting to hemp-derived THC" reported MJBiz It's not hard to understand that more and more companies are pivoting to hemp because the market provides interstate commerce (i.e a bigger market), lower cogs, less regs & taxes and is growing faster than the legal state markets. As someone who was very negative on hemp, and all in on the legal state markets, I have completely changed my perspective and I encourage others to consider the same. Few months ago Beau Whitney put out an estimate that the intoxicating hemp market was $28B and the legal state markets were $28B. With less headwinds preventing the growth of the hemp market it's highly likely that the US intoxicating hemp market has now eclipsed the legal state markets and is probably going to continue to grow rapidly eating away at the legal state markets. Have a strong opinion held lightly.
