The EU-Mercosur trade agreement, which have been 25 years in the making, could become agenda setting for Ursula von der Leyens second Commission - if it passes, as France and Poland are trying rally #EU countries to form a blocking group against it. The approval of this agreement will say a lot about how EU is planning to adjust to the new world we are seeing, with geopoliticial challenges coming from many places, including a potential trade conflict with both #US and #China. The positions within EU is pretty clear - its the open market, free trade mindset and that globalisation and global trade is a win-win vs the protection of own production and markets (other arguments on this side will include health and environmental standards arguments as well). Whether this gets approved or not, will signal what power EU still have to be an active global player the next 5 years. This morning, new EU competition commissioner Teresa Ribera gave her first public speech. A good moment to present priorities. Although no one expected revolutionary ideas. It became clear that Ribera wanted to present the EU as a safe space for (foreign) investors. While doing that, she focused on US and China, while noting that the EU is an open economy (note the absence of the word “strategic”) and proclaiming “We like the rule of law”. With that she kicked off the game against the future Trump administration that has hinted at retaliatory actions against the EU for targeting US companies. Other elements of the speech included continuing with implementation of the DMA, completing the EU single market (citing the Draghi-report) and stimulating hydrogen and clean tech as well as investments in energy, defence and space. #EUcompetition #competitionlaw #innovation

The European Commission Political Guidelines 2024-2029 are out, but what's in them for industry? More focus on competitiveness, an SME check, better regulation and less red tape? It is hardly possible to summarise two hours of dense discussions in a post. Nonetheless, one needs to try. 📌What? EU manufacturing value chains - of which #steel is a critical element- are undergoing the most profound transformation of the last decades. Decarbonising them in global (and not always rule based) markets is at the same time a huge opportunity and challenge. Success means strengthening EU's #resilience. On the contrary, failing will create new #dependencies (e.g. from energy to critical materials and technologies). 📌 How? The EU needs a solid business case for investments. (Defending the status quo is clearly not an option). Competitive clean energy, international level playing field, de-risking instruments were the most heard elements. This requires complementing the traditional EU's regulatory approach with best practices from third countries. 📌 When? As soon as possible. Speed is of essence, if the EU wants to remain the frontrunner of the transition.

With the new European Commission starting, it is a critical moment for Europe. Can we step up to drive growth, innovation, and investment where it’s needed most?   In my latest blog, I talk about what’s at stake, the changes we need, and how we can close the gap to make Europe stronger and better connected.
