These efforts not only address immediate mental health needs but also pave the way for reintegration into society with strength and resilience.

Is There Really a 'Juvenile Prison Industry' in the US? Answers: https://lnkd.in/gzgU2naP #JuvenilePrisonIndustry #PrisonIndustrialComplex #SocioEconomicIssues Hey everyone! 👋 I'm doing some research about missing people cases, and I stumbled down a pretty intense rabbit hole about what seems to be a "juvenile prison industry" in the U.S. It's been quite an eye-opener. While I know of forced behavior camps, they seem to be private institutions, so I wonder how that all fits into the bigger picture. Here are some things I've noticed: **The Presence of Police in Schools:** It seems like schools there often have actual policemen or guards, complete with batons or pepper spray. Is that common? 🚔 **Foster Care to Prison Pipeline:** I’ve read some pretty concerning articles about this, where kids seemingly end up in the justice system after going through foster care. What’s the story behind this? 🕵️♂️ **Neighborhood Scores Impacting Schools:** There are mentions of neighborhood scores determining which schools kids go to. How does that play out in real life? 🏘️ **Teen Detention and Parole Officers:** I've seen references to teenage dete...

A huge thank you to POPS (Diane Curry OBE) for their swift response to a #SaferCustody concern over the weekend. I won't name the prison involved, but knowing the sector as I do, this is sadly not unusual. It is totally unacceptable for prisons to offer a 24/7 service for reporting concerns but not answer the phone. It is unacceptable to put prisoners' lives at risk by ignoring concerns from friends, family members, and professionals. By being the only team to respond, POPS has demonstrated the vital importance of having voluntary sector family services teams in each prison. On a related note, the Prisoners' Families Helpline has a Safer Custody Portal for reporting concerns online, should you need it. Prisons receive form submissions directly but are also currently supported to respond by the Helpline team (managed by Prison Advice and Care Trust (Pact)) - https://lnkd.in/eGK__3Qb. #PrisonReform #CriminalJusticeReform #MentalHealth

National Network condemns Construction of New Children's Prison in Darwin Construction is underway for a new children's prison in Darwin The Department of Territory Families, Housing and Communities has announced that this new prison will supposedly meet the therapeutic and rehabilitative needs of children. However, this decision is deeply troubling and fundamentally flawed. A prison is a prison is a prison, and no matter the label, it remains a place of violence and trauma, entirely unfit for children. 'Prisons are inherently violent environments that perpetuate cycles of harm. Children belong in our communities, in their homes, and classrooms, not in cages. The focus must shift to building up the capacity of families and communities, ensuring safety and support for all, not just a few. We must move away from the warehousing of children and a focus on punishment, exile, scarcity, and harm. Our efforts should be directed towards repair, safety and wellbeing, fostering environments where children can grow and flourish. The construction of this new children's prison is a giant step backward, ignoring the urgent need for a transformative approach to justice. It is time to end the cycle of violence and invest in the future of our children by providing them with the support and opportunities they deserve - and it's time we put a moratorium on prison beds in this country. No new prisons, not now, not ever Read the full press release on the National Network website

When we discuss access to justice, the focus is usually on courts, police, prisons, legal assistance providers and the law itself. Reflecting on the two major legal reviews I have led, a decade apart, I have come across a significant number of issues where administrative structures and attitudes with justice departments have presented a barrier to access to justice. All jurisdictions would be well served to conduct periodic reviews of the effectiveness and efficiency of their justice/attorney general’s departments.
The justice department needs urgent reform so it can better address the needs of young offenders, the prison watchdog has told an inquest for the first youth to die in West Australian custody.
