New report from the European Environment Agency: ‘Just Sustainability Transitions – From Concept to Practice’ 🌍 We're thrilled to share this publication, featuring contributions from our colleagues at the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development, Utrecht University and the EEA - European Topic Centres on Sustainability Transitions (ETC ST)! "As Europe strives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and decouple economic growth from resource use, certain social groups and European regions will be disproportionately affected. It is therefore critical to ensure that transitions are fair. A failure to do so risks exacerbating existing inequalities or even creating new ones, potentially leading to social divisions, discontent and resistance to change. Achieving justice in sustainability transitions also requires recognition of the interconnectedness and complexity of the systems at play. A comprehensive and holistic policy framework that brings green transition policies together with employment, training and social policies, and integrates and coordinates policy objectives across key economic sectors, can better support a just transition. At the same time, delivering transitions that are fair demands careful consideration of the specificities, inequalities and challenges of the local context, and its interplay with larger geographical scales." My main takeaway from the interview is about which #SDGs have the most positive, synergistic relationships with other ones, i.e. they can be tackled at the same time without compromising each other. Just finished "Sustainability Foundations: Core Concepts" by Amy Luers! Two tips to get top-down support for sustainable practices 💚🍃 I talked to Marta Rodriguez about her experiences as a sustainability manager and there was a big surprise!   Marta’s journey in sustainability started at the Francis Crick institute in the UK. The UK has been pretty early to support sustainability in science.   What really surprised me how she described the role of top-down support!   Of course you would expect it some passionate sustainability managers that that help to get a critical mass of people together.   Nevertheless, she emphasized the absence of unnecessary regulation!   It makes sense… if you have too many roadblocks you become frustrated … but what can you do if you do not have such advantageous circumstances?   It is the absence of excessive doubt and anxiety that is crucial to prevent those. Some regulations are essential but it easily can become too much when leadership is not revieing rules regularly. So how to change them?   When talking to decision makers and group leaders, Marta advises to highlight how adopting sustainable practices is crucial to meet requirement from funding agencies and publishers.   Yes, sustainability is not optional anymore. We will have to prioritize it, the early, the better.   The second tip of her is to my mind as powerful:   Taking the courage to talk to the people you want to join the green movement one-on-one. Being there helps to explain why sustainability matters and how it benefits everyone, including cost savings and improved research efficiency.   However, it also adds the human element that most people look for, especially when they worry about change...   We also talked about coping with frustration, choosing your battles wisely and other tips.
