1st HUMAN CLINICAL TRIAL: James Lind's scurvy experiment is a landmark moment in the history of medicine. In 1747, Lind, a Scottish physician, conducted one of the first controlled clinical trials aboard the HMS Salisbury, a British Royal Navy ship. Scurvy was a common and deadly disease among sailors at the time, caused by a deficiency of vitamin C due to long periods without fresh fruits and vegetables. Lind divided twelve sailors suffering from scurvy into six groups and provided each group with a different treatment, ranging from cider to vinegar to citrus fruits. Remarkably, the sailors who received citrus fruits, such as lemons and oranges, showed rapid improvement in their symptoms. If you like my content. It is exactly 277 years since the British Navy surgeon James Lind wanted to treat scurvy, a lethal disease at the time, and tested different potential cures on 12 sailors. ⛵ He allocated the men into six groups and treated them with different medications. Lind evaluated the results of different groups, following the principle of comparing like to like: the treatment results were the best with the group that was given oranges and lemons. 🍋 Lind's groundbreaking work is considered the first clinical trial, which is why 20 May is celebrated as Clinical Trials Day. Scurvy led to the deaths of 2 million sailors between the 16th and 18th centuries. Surgeon James Lind discovered that Vitamin C in lemons and limes cured the disease in 1747. Dr. Lind informed the British Royal Navy who 50 years later started providing sailors a lemon or lime a week to prevent scurvy. Good news, modern healthcare is not as slow as in the 18th century. Bad news, common sense improvements in healthcare are still incredibly S L O W… Most individual providers are rightly in healthcare to help people. But overall healthcare is a business. Why are decisions made so slowly to make common sense improvements? Seems like a bad business strategy. I've seen from the inside and outside of hospitals and know why they're slow. Executives are out of touch for what's happening on the ground level. Mid-level management manages up. Ground-level managers are trying to stay above water and not drown. Employees delivering care see what's going on and gripe to each other. The result is people/"patients" are waiting for a lemon/lime. #Healthcare #PatientExperience #HospitalCare

The first randomized control trial...and the cure for scurvy... James Lind is remembered as the man who helped to conquer a killer disease. His reported experiment on board a naval ship in 1747 showed that oranges and lemons were a cure for scurvy. One set of landing pages got lemons and oranges, the other didn't 😂 Those who did, didn't contract scurvy while the rest did, proving almost definitively that Vitamin C was the cure. It took a little more work to isolate it as the active ingredient, and initially the roll out to the general populace failed because they boiled the oranges and lemons to get a more concentrated dose of Vitamin C, but the heat destroyed the vitamin. For 18th Century sailors, disease during long sea voyages was often more dangerous than enemy action. One British expedition to raid Spanish holdings in the Pacific Ocean in the 1740s lost 1,300 of an original complement of 2,000 men to illness. American trypanosomiasis (Chagas disease) and human African trypanosomiasis (HAT; sleeping sickness) are both caused by single-celled flagellates that are transmitted by arthropods. In 1734, the English naval surgeon John Aktins published the first accurate medical report on African sleeping sickness. Chagas disease is named after the Brazilian physician Carlos Chagas, who discovered the disease in 1909. What is the difference between African and American trypanosomiasis?
