The wine industry is becoming the "Survival of the Fittest" The recent San Francisco Chronicle article on the state of the wine industry calls it plainly. "The industry is overcrowded." The reality behind that truth is sad. Businesses will close. But isn't that natural in nature and in business? Times get easy -> lots of easy growth happens -> circumstances change -> ... Overgrowth happens -> pruning occurs -> times get easier... Repeat. I believe this will be good in the long run for the wine industry. Everyone knows it... there are a lot of changes the wine industry needs to make. - technology adoption - better marketing - better margins - more unique brand/audience targeting - connecting with culture and other brands It's hard to do all of this with the decrease in wine sales right now. If you can survive and adapt, you'll be well suited for the next boom. It will come. Not until many of the significant problems are solved, but it will come. Thats how nature and business work.
