A week or so ago our new CEO Susie Nam gave a fireside chat and was dropping gems left and right. One of the things that she talked about really resonated with me. To quote: "My own racial journey was that it wasn't probably until15 years ago that I came to terms with being the model minority. And that I was educated and come from a certain background. So in a lot of ways, I'm passing in a white world. I have all the trappings for it. I look a certain way. I talk a certain way, and I have certain SAT words. I went to a certain school. I can slip stream into dominant white culture because I've been bred for it in lots of ways, and it was intentional, subconscious, and all of those things. But those things make me a frictionless minority. and I think about 15 years ago, I realized I don't want to do that anymore" I loved this. I've lived this. Feeling like you were molded to fit in someone else's world begins to wear on you and feel inauthentic the more self love and awareness you bring into your life. The future along in my career the less code switching I do. The term "frictionless minority" is such a great visual. Because how many of us were praised for blending but then looked at trouble makers when they start speaking up about inequalities. Everyone wants to brag about diversity numbers but no one is ready when those diverse experience comes with diverse thoughts and challenge the status quo. What's your take on this snippet or your own personal experience as a frictionless minority? #leoburnett #susienam #dei #diversityequityinclusion #diversity

Empathy matters~ Imagine the power of empathy in transforming our culture. By practicing vicarious learning and empathy one person at a time, we can begin to address issues of racism, bigotry, and misogyny. This shift could challenge the narratives of rugged individualism and meritocracy that often perpetuate inequality. Our culture, at times, seems like capitalism on steroids, where blame is placed on the victims of systemic injustices. Perhaps one day empathy will replace bullying, fostering a more unified and inclusive society free from hate. There are few better learning tools than experiencial learning. #Empathy #Inclusion #SocialChange

Key Term Tuesday: Implicit Bias Why I Chose This Topic: Implicit bias refers to unconscious attitudes that affect our understanding, actions, and decisions. These biases can perpetuate inequality even when individuals consciously endorse equality.
