https://lnkd.in/emctbh48 🌱 Taking a Deep Breath: A Dutch Green Software Milestone (This builds on the great work of past initiatives, and it's one impactful step in a long journey) I'm taking a moment to savor this... This feeling of anticipation is the culmination of months of hard work alongside Pini Reznik, Jeroen Raijmakers, Sophie Trinder, Natasha R. And again Green Software Foundation thank you for this opportunity. This Thursday, we're kicking off the Green Software - The Netherlands Community, and I have a deep conviction that this is just the start of a transformative journey. ✨ Our Mission: Empowering IT with Sustainable Choices We envision a Dutch IT sector where every IT professional understands their power to create impact-aware software and hardware solutions. Imagine the potential! Code that's lean and efficient, hardware built with longevity in mind – this isn't just about the environment; it's about shaping a tech industry that's both innovative and responsible. 💻♻️ This is Just the Beginning... Our launch event this Thursday is where passionate minds come together to learn, collaborate, and lay the groundwork for a thriving, sustainable tech community. This year we'll dive into the principles of green software, explore practical strategies, and envision the future we want to create. This is where ideas turn into action! The Meetups are meant to be recurring, not just a one-time hype, and follow where the community leads us. If you're ready to join the community, reach out! Let's discuss how you can get involved, champion sustainable practices, and make a tangible difference in the world of tech. This is our chance to shape a legacy of sustainability in tech, a contribution we can all take pride in. Let's start the conversation! ⚡ Shocking but software doesn't run for free... ⚡ 🌱 Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the 2nd meetup in Amsterdam of Green Software Foundation - The Netherlands 🇳🇱. While I already knew a lot about Green Software, the presentations reinforced the concepts and added great perspectives. I also enjoyed sharing and hearing from others about what made them interested in Green Software. Of course, the immense carbon footprint of LLMs/AI had to be mentioned, specifically by estimating the impact using the Software Carbon Intensity (SCI), which has recently become an ISO standard, through the Impact Framework. 💡 My biggest takeaway was that you should first optimize system utilization, addressing the embodied carbon in servers and the issue of underused servers, before focusing on optimizing the software itself. This can be seen as the "low-hanging fruit." 💧 Secondly, Wilco's presentation reminded us to consider the impact and measure it. Fortunately, I work at HULO.ai, where we strive to make a significant impact by saving a lot of drinking water through better leak detection and localization. 🚀 From the start, HULO.ai has cared about its (software) footprint, and luckily our software does not require huge amounts of data to be trained. As a startup, there is still a lot of work to do, but I believe we will continue to improve and keep tackling the impact we make each day! 🏆 Thanks to Wilco Burggraaf for the invite and Vandebron for hosting the event. 🎓 To learn the basics of Green Software, take the very short course on https://lnkd.in/eyTCWFhn 📆 They will organize many more meetups, so follow https://lnkd.in/eQpgSARX #greensoftware #meetup #impact #ai Frank van der Hulst | Laura Garzon Useche | Robbert Lodewijks | Redmer van Netten | Rudy Dijkstra

We are Making the Tech We Want 🗓️ October 17, 14:30 - 15:30 CEST 📍 Panel 4 Open Knowledge Foundation brings together a list of incredible panelists, including Jaromil, and invite you to insightful discussions led by experts who are challenging the status quo and envisioning a more equitable and sustainable tech future. Another stack is possible! — register now and help shape the tech we want! In recent years, technology has adopted a complex, wasteful, and expensive approach to serving its purpose, making it rare, even in the open movement, to find affordable, accessible, and sustainable software. There is an urgent need for the technology industry to re-think how software is developed, which tools do we use and how tech solutions are currently conceived, coded, and deployed. During these two-day The Tech We Want Online Summit, the Open Knowledge Foundation (OKFN) is bringing together key voices working on public interest technologies to start a collective conversation about new practical ways to build software that is useful, simple, long-lasting and focused on solving people's real problems. https://lnkd.in/getShzYj This is an online event free of charge and open to everyone. Open Knowledge welcomes registrations by everyone, especially technology workers, developers, engineers and programming language specialists who are interested in taking a critical look at current technologies. #purpose #technologyrocks #approach #openknowledge #knowledge
