🛡️ In a world where misinformation can spread faster than the truth, who is standing guard? The Wikimedia Foundation, through platforms like Wikipedia, plays a pivotal part in combating misinformation. PEN America, a nonprofit dedicated to protecting free expression, explained this unique role in a recent interview with Maggie Dennis, Vice-President of Community Resilience and Sustainability at the Wikimedia Foundation. Unlike traditional media outlets, Wikimedia projects rely on a vast network of volunteers dedicated to maintaining accurate and neutral content. These contributors engage in human-led content moderation, continuously editing and improving articles to ensure reliability. This collaborative approach not only upholds the integrity of information, but also fosters a community committed to truth and transparency. “We firmly believe that Wikipedia’s most important bulwark against disinformation is the platform’s open, transparent, and participatory model. The more humans take part, the better the internet’s knowledge becomes. Studies have shown that when a larger number of volunteer editors contribute to a Wikipedia article from diverse political backgrounds, it produces higher-quality articles,” said Dennis. What is it like to spend four days with Wikimedia volunteers in Indianapolis, US? In late September, we wrote about getting ready for a very "Wiki" week. For Stan Adams, that meant attending this year’s WikiConference North America (WCNA). Stan answers our question and tells us about the experience: "👥👤 The Wikimedia community is special among internet-based communities because it also meets in person. Attending WCNA reminded me there’s no substitute for in-person gatherings when you want to collaborate, discuss, and solve problems together. Community members who usually work online can share stories, catch up on life events, and strengthen bonds. 🥳 In that sense, WCNA is at least as much a family reunion as a formal conference, which includes a 'culture crawl' around museums, libraries, and other cultural highlights as well as presentations and workshops about all things Wiki. ⚡I’m thankful for the session slot where I gave a 'lightning talk' about public policy issues with which we engage worldwide: kids’ online safety, content moderation regulations, and AI deepfakes, to name some. Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia, is unique among online platforms because legislative and regulatory proposals intended for the largest social media platforms can also impact our efforts to share free and open knowledge. ✊🏻🛡️ My goal with the talk was to raise awareness about how policymakers’ proposals can impact volunteers’ contributions in the public interest, and how the Global Advocacy works to promote and protect Wikimedia projects. 📸🏛️🎥🗣️ 15 minutes isn’t much time, but informal conversations between sessions are often as productive as presentations. I spoke with several volunteers who want to work on a state-level policy issue: They want to make sure images created by state governments—think about photos of government buildings or videos of legislative proceedings—are in the public domain, so that archivists, journalists, and of course, Wikipedia volunteers can use them freely and openly. 🎉 With luck, we’ll celebrate state-by-state successes at many WikiConferences in the future!"

On the occasion of the UN's Summit of the Future (occurring on September 22 and 23, aiming to tackle some of the most pressing challenges facing the world today), Wikimedia Foundation will host an event to discuss the importance of digital public goods, such as #Wikipedia, in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. According to the Digital Public Goods Alliance, digital public goods are resources freely available, adhering to open standards, respecting user privacy and aligning with relevant legal and ethical guidelines. They include open-source software, open data, open artificial intelligence models, open standards, and open content, and they are essential for addressing global challenges and promoting equitable access to knowledge. The event will be livestreamed on Sept. 21 @ 11:15 - 12:30 PM EDT #digitalpublicgoods #accesstoknowledge #SummitOfTheFuture #OurCommonFuture https://lnkd.in/ebByBnpv

How can we achieve an open, free, and secure digital future for everyone? This is what the Global Digital Compact aims to address. Through a consultation process involving several stakeholders, the Global Digital Compact will be the most comprehensive attempt ever at creating a vision for a shared approach to governing digital technologies. The Wikimedia Foundation, along with 12 Wikimedia affiliates, published an open letter calling on UN Member States to include commitments in the Global Digital Compact that can allow online public interest projects, such as Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia, to thrive. By protecting these projects and the communities that create them, the international community can ensure that the digital environment advances sustainable development and human rights. Since the letter was published on 23 April, more than 216 individuals from over 50 countries and 11 new organizations committed to online public interest projects have signed it.
