I always joke about how I learned Social Media Management and Community Management, simply from being chronically online as a teenager and into my college years. When I talk to other people in the industry whether social media or gaming-specific, about how I can stay aligned with internet culture, my answer is always the same: listen, analyze, and deconstruct. Platforms change. Algorithms change. Demographics change. You know what doesn't change? Understanding and seeing the trends when you listen.

Social Media Manager. Director of Social Media. Social Media Strategist. None of these roles existed when I was in college because social media didn't exist then. And given how fast this industry moves, any social media textbook being studied now will likely be outdated in 6 months (or less). 100% of what I learned about social media as a profession I learned on the job. And this profession changes daily. So whether you're just starting your career or have been in the social media game for 10+ years, don't worry if you don't have it all figured out. You're not alone. 𝙄𝙩 𝙢𝙖𝙮 𝙗𝙚 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙧𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙞𝙖𝙡, 𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙬𝙚 𝙖𝙜𝙧𝙚𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙙𝙤 𝙖𝙬𝙖𝙮 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙝𝙧𝙖𝙨𝙚 '𝙨𝙤𝙘𝙞𝙖𝙡 𝙢𝙚𝙙𝙞𝙖 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙩'?🚮 The phrase annoys me, besides the fact that nobody on earth is an expert in social. Let me explain why: -> 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝗼 𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗹𝘆 -> 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗲𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 -> '𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁' 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲'𝘀 𝗻𝗼 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 -> 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 = 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 -> 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 '𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗲' 𝗮𝘁 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗷𝗼𝗯𝘀 -> 𝗜𝘁'𝗱 𝗯𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 It's difficult to avoid the fact that there are so many titles for essentially the same job. 👇 I call myself a social media manager, some call themselves social media professionals, some are niche into strategy or community building -> but I have to stress, 𝗡𝗢 𝗢𝗡𝗘 is a social media 'expert' 📣 I'm intrigued to know 𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗥 opinion on social media job titles, let's chat in the comments 💭 . . . . . 𝗣𝗦: In my view, the term 'expert' does not align with the ever-evolving nature of social marketing, even though people who describe themselves as such are highly skilled at what they do. ☺️

This might be a controversial one, but PLEASE can we agree to bin the phrase 'social media expert'? 🚮 Besides me just having a general dislike of the phrase, not one single person on earth is an *expert* in social. Here are five things I would do differently if I were starting a career in social media management: - **Consume Free Information**: I would start by absorbing as much free information as possible. I would search YouTube for videos with valuable insights to get started. - **Create and Practice**: I would open an account and start practicing what I’ve learned. I would set a 30-day plan to grow a social media page from scratch, based on my goals. - **Promote Myself Early**: I would make my work known by talking about it publicly and informing people about the services I offer. - **Focus on One Platform**: I would concentrate on mastering one platform first, learning the strategies needed for growth, and then expand to other social media platforms. - **Document My Process**: I would document my journey from the beginning, sharing my progress and reflecting on my growth, which would help me appreciate my work more. Recently, I have completed the "Essential Skills for Social Media Managers" LinkedIn Learning course. I have found a lot of valuable information, that would be very useful for future employment and progression in the marketing industry. I would like to discuss my findings as I found this course very interesting and knowledgeable. Firstly, I would like to mention why I chose to do this particular course as I believe social media plays a key part in marketing and it is important to understand the key fundamentals so that it can be used to benefit marketers. Social media is a powerful tool in marketing, as you can reach a wide range of audiences at once and it also allows you to connect more with customers on a personal level. I have learnt essential skills such as: strategy development, content creation, community management, paid social advertising, collaboration with external partners and social media measurement. Furthermore, it has also sharpened my analysing skills in terms of social media goals and metrics. These skills will be useful to me in my future career as, I feel like I have already been equipped with the fundamentals to fulfil any role of my choosing. This course has laid out a good foundation for my future career as, it has allowed me to establish the basics before moving onto the more complex skill. Alexandra Severn

The thing about working in social media marketing is that you always kind of feel like you’re balancing on top of an ever-rolling ball. Social media is inherently changing, so for you to stay on top of it, you have to roll with those changes. While also keeping your focus and not getting distracted (shiny object syndrome anyone… 🪩) or pulled off course. For anyone new or considering a career in social media marketing, one of the best pieces of advice I can share is to always have a learning mentality. Be willing to be a student. Be willing to say, I don’t know YET, but I can figure it out. Having worked as a Social Media Manager for almost two years now, I’ve learned a lot along the way. Here’s my advice to fellow social media managers: Know your BOUNDARIES! I can't express this enough. Social media managers are not "everything" managers. Our job is to create, schedule, and analyze social media content—not handle every aspect of marketing or admin work. Clearly outline your responsibilities, and don’t let others take advantage by piling on unrelated tasks. I've seen this happen to many managers. Stay organized! Effective planning is key to success. Build a content calendar, schedule posts in advance, and leave room for real-time engagement. This keeps you on track and helps deliver consistent messaging. Engage with intention and meaning. It's not just about posting content—building a community is crucial. Engage authentically with your audience, respond to comments, and foster conversations. Social media is a two-way street, not just a content dump. Don't stop learning. Social media trends change fast. Stay ahead by continuously learning—whether it’s through online courses, webinars, or simply keeping up with industry news. This keeps your strategies fresh and relevant. By setting boundaries, staying organized, engaging genuinely, and committing to continuous learning, you can thrive in this field. Remember, the goal is not just to manage social media—it's to make a meaningful impact! 📈 #SocialMediaManagement

"There is a huge difference between a Social media manager and a Social media handler." . . I was gulping down a glass of water when I heard that and the water almost came out the wrong way. As funny as it may sound, it is very true - I realised that during my initial stage in social media management, it's safe to call me a handler. A handler is one who relies on just posting regularly without any proper strategy. No brand Marketing, no brand voice, no audience relations, just one social media handler posting everyday without any plan of what s/he hopes to achieve. A social media manager is a highly sophisticated position, think of yourself as the general manager of the company's social media needs, once that gravity of responsibility has rested on your shoulders, now look at your skill sets, are they enough to match such responsibilities?
