Global Health Emergency Declared as Mpox Outbreak Spreads The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared a global health emergency due to the rapid spread of mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, in African countries. This marks the second time in three years that the WHO has designated an mpox epidemic as a global emergency. *Deadlier Than Before* The current outbreak is more virulent than the previous one, with a death rate of approximately 3% compared to 0.2% in 2022. The virus has already claimed 537 lives in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with 15,600 reported cases. Women and children under 15 are among the most vulnerable. *Global Spread* The outbreak has spread to 13 countries in Africa, including some that had never reported mpox cases before. The WHO's declaration aims to prompt member countries to prepare for the virus's appearance and share resources with poorer nations. *Concerted International Action Needed* Experts emphasize the need for concerted international action to stem the spread of the virus. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has urged clinicians and the public in the United States to be alert for the virus. *Vaccination Efforts* Congo has approved two mpox vaccines, but has yet to institute an immunization plan. The WHO has invited vaccine manufacturers to apply for an emergency use listing, and Bavarian Nordic has donated 15,000 doses of Jynneos to be distributed in African countries. *Challenges Ahead* However, experts warn that the available vaccines are insufficient, and more efforts are needed to control the outbreak. Clinical trials are underway to evaluate the effectiveness of Jynneos in protecting children and people who have already been exposed to the virus. *A Call to Action* The WHO's declaration serves as a call to action for global cooperation to combat the spread of mpox. With concerted efforts, it is possible to stop transmission and prevent further spread. ✍️ Dileep Kumar #monkeypox #who #alarming #mpox2024

#WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus declares #mpox outbreak a public health emergency of international concern « The emergence of a new clade of mpox, its rapid spread in eastern DRC, and the reporting of cases in several neighbouring countries are very worrying. On top of outbreaks of other mpox clades in DRC and other countries in Africa, it’s clear that a coordinated international response is needed to stop these outbreaks and save lives » The two #vaccines currently in use for mpox are recommended by WHO’s Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization, and are also approved by WHO-listed national regulatory authorities, as well as by individual countries including Nigeria and the DRC. Last week, the Director-General triggered the process for Emergency Use Listing for mpox vaccines, which will accelerate vaccine access for lower-income countries which have not yet issued their own national regulatory approval. Emergency Use Listing also enables partners including Gavi and UNICEF to procure vaccines for distribution. https://lnkd.in/ep6YdsxE

𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐤𝐞𝐲𝐩𝐨𝐱 - 𝐄𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐙𝐨𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐀𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐭 ❗ Recent reports confirm that Pakistan has identified three cases of monkeypox in individuals who were recently returned from an Arab country. As the world continues to grapple with the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the emergence of monkeypox has raised concerns among public health authorities about the potential for this virus to become a new threat. Monkeypox, declared a "Public Health Emergency of International Concern" by the World Health Organization (WHO), is caused by an #orthopoxvirus related to variola (smallpox), vaccinia, and cowpox viruses. The disease gained international attention in the 1970s following the eradication of smallpox, with the smallpox vaccine offering some #cross-immunity against monkeypox. 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧: Monkeypox can spread through: 🔴Direct contact with an infected person 🔴Contact with contaminated objects (fomites) 🔴Vertical transmission (from mother to child) 🔴Bites or scratches from infected animals 𝐒𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐬: Symptoms of monkeypox may appear within a week of exposure and typically last 2-4 weeks. They include: • Rash • Fever • Sore throat • Headache • Muscle aches • Back pain • Swollen lymph nodes 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: Most monkeypox cases are mild and resolve with supportive care. However, antiviral medications (such as tecovirimat, brinicidofovir, and cidofovir) and Vaccinia Immune Globulin Intravenous (VIGIV) are available for severe cases. 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Immunization with the #smallpox vaccine may offer some protection against monkeypox and improve the clinical outcome of the infection. Additionally, maintaining a safe distance from infected individuals can help reduce the risk of transmission. Let's raise #awareness about #monkeypox and take necessary precautions to safeguard #public health. #MonkeypoxAlert #ZoonoticDiseases #PublicHealth #EmergingInfectiousDiseases #HealthAwareness #InfectiousDisease #PandemicPreparedness #ViralInfections #OneHealth #GlobalHealth

Taiwan's Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported four new domestic cases of mpox between August 13 and August 20, involving individuals aged 20 to 40. All cases were identified as clade IIb, which differs from the more concerning clade Ib, highlighted in a recent outbreak in Africa that prompted the CDC to raise travel alerts for seven African countries on August 15. No patients had received mpox vaccinations. The CDC noted a 35% increase in vaccinations, with 807 administered last week. Additionally, 17 local cases of melioidosis were reported, raising this year's total to 54, the highest since 2006, with seven deaths, all involving individuals with chronic illnesses. The CDC stated that melioidosis cases often surge after typhoons, emphasizing vigilance in affected areas. #AsiaRisk #EpidemicsandPandemics #Taiwan Follow us for daily updates on risk and operations in Asia! https://lnkd.in/gXPHJU4u

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced last month that the #mpox outbreak in Africa could be stopped within six months with governments’ leadership and close cooperation between partners, with vaccine shipments due to arrive soon in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the country with the most reported mpox cases. However, the new version of mpox virus has spread to new regions, with 258 recent cases identified in countries including Burundi, Rwanda, Kenya, Uganda, Sweden, and Thailand. This global spread highlights the urgency of containing the outbreak, especially with the new strain of the virus emerging in DRC that may be spreading more easily. The ongoing mpox outbreaks in Africa were declared a global health emergency by the WHO, calling for international help to stop the spread of the virus. At Emergex, our vaccine technology targets highly conserved regions of a virus and ‘primes’ the immune system’s T cell army to recognize and clear viral infected cells before the virus can replicate and disease takes hold. Emergex candidates are designed to provide broad, cross-reactive protection against infectious disease, such as smallpox and mpox, of the same virus family (in this case, Poxviridae), as well as current and emerging variants. This approach may also provide immunity against other members of the Pox family, positioning our technology as a crucial tool for pandemic preparedness by offering protection against current and future outbreaks.
