Westfalia Fruit exports first South African avocados to China Westfalia Fruit has successfully exported its first avocados from South Africa to China, marking a significant expansion of the company's global footprint. The first container arrived in Shanghai on October 8, and will be featured at the China International Import Expo in November. This achievement strengthens Westfalia Fruit's presence in one of the world's largest economies and underscores their strategy of entering high-potential markets globally. The shipment follows the successful conclusion of a phytosanitary agreement between South Africa and China, signed in August 2023. With China's growing demand for fresh produce, particularly premium fruits like avocados, South Africa is well-positioned to diversify its export markets. (SOUTH AFRICA 15.03.24) #avocados South African avocados set to arrive in Europe. The first containers of South African avocados bound for the EU and UK will arrive next week, slightly delayed due to shipping delays from Cape Town's container terminal. Despite the delay, the avocado industry remains optimistic about a successful season, with total exports from South African ports expected to reach around 20 million cartons, including shipments from Zimbabwe and Mozambique. The market in Europe and the UK is anticipated to be empty, leading to a strong start to the season. Additionally, optimism surrounds increased exports to the East, with China and Japan recently opened for South African avocados. Registration of orchards and packhouses for shipment to China is complete, awaiting approval from Chinese authorities before exports can commence. Western Australia has experienced a 400 per cent increase in export demand for its avocados year-on-year, with the 2023/24 season worth $36.8 million, up from $7.1 million in 2022/23. Growing demand in Asia and the Middle East has fuelled the increase.

DID YOU KNOW? 🧐 The Kenyan government suspended avocado exports in November 2023 due to insufficient maturity levels, March 2024: The ban was lifted after assessments confirmed that avocados were mature and ready for export. The ban aims to prevent the export of immature avocados, which can damage Kenya's standing as a reliable supplier. The government assesses maturity levels through surveys before allowing exports, ensuring that only suitable fruit is shipped. We were all told access to India was such a great win for Australian avocados and it indeed it was, but as is its right, India is looking beyond just Australia, in this case importing avocados from Brazil. This is even more reason for expanding export markets and getting market access to Japan for QLD grown avocados and access for Australian grown avocados to China. When will there be a whole of government approach? I’ll bet you the Brazilians do so, and at the highest political levels in order to get access, just as the Australian governmrnt does so effectively for wine and lobster. Why won’t they do it for fresh produce?? Maybe avocado growers should turn their avos into wine, that might at least get the government’s attention. 😎
