🔎 Prioritizing Safety: A Continuous Commitment Last week, we conducted a Management Safety Visit to two of our mini-grid construction sites in Zambia, part of the #IAREP (Increased Access to Electricity and Renewable Energy Production) project financed by the European Union. Safety is an ongoing priority at every stage of our construction and operations, ensuring we consistently raise the bar. It was an opportunity to connect directly with our local teams, whose dedication and insights are invaluable. Together, we addressed challenges and developed joint solutions that will be applied across the 60 mini-grid sites we are building in Zambia. This can help combat issues such as corruption, favoritism, and opacity in the bidding process. Below are some key suggestions drawn from international expertise: 1. Transparent Bidding Process: Public Disclosure: All information related to the tender, terms, and evaluation criteria should be made publicly available. The full details of the bidding conditions and selection criteria should be published. Clear Selection Process: Multiple evaluation models (technical, financial) should be used to assess bids transparently. This will help avoid any bias or corruption in the selection process. 2. Environmental and Social Evaluation: Feasibility Study: Environmental and social impact assessments should be mandatory for all projects. Similar to international practices, Bangladesh must ensure that projects are evaluated for their environmental health, impact on local communities, and social responsibility. 3. Adoption of Sustainable and Advanced Technologies: Incorporating New Technologies: Following global trends, Bangladesh should focus on incorporating smart grids, automated monitoring systems, and modern energy management technologies in the planning and execution of power plants. Technical Competence: The selected construction companies should be evaluated for their technical capacity and past performance to ensure that only qualified firms are awarded projects.
