Join targeted industry groups: LinkedIn or Meetup groups like ‘Women of SaaS’ ‘Tech Jobs for Good’ etc are active spaces where leads circulate frequently and people are open to connecting. 2. Take on short-term projects & collaborations: Freelance platforms (Upwork, for instance) or professional Slack channels (e.g., The Designer Hangout for UX/UI) offer projects to keep your skills sharp and your portfolio growing. 3. Invest in high-demand skills: Platforms like Coursera have courses in trending fields—AI, data analytics, project management—that can set you apart and spark new career paths. 4. Utilize specialized job boards: Sites like AngelList for startups, FlexJobs for remote roles, and Blind’s job board feature roles tailored to niche skills and specialized markets. And finally, let’s not overlook the human factor! Network, pitch yourself, reach out. Laid off? Here's what I tell tech talent who come to me seeking advice 👇 1. Pause and Process: Take a moment to breathe. Resist the urge to jump into the next thing impulsively. It’s okay to feel unsettled, but making rushed decisions can lead to regrets. Remember, you're on the rebound. 2. Reflect Deeply (I love this the most ❤️ ) While the experience is fresh, evaluate what you’ve learned: • What aspects of your last job did you love? • What challenges frustrated you? • What new skills did you acquire? • How have you grown professionally and personally? I would do this in the first 48 hours. 3. Seek Support Reach out to mentors, former colleagues, or friends who understand your field. Simple conversations can provide comfort and closure. You're not alone here. 4. Recharge Your Batteries Do something you enjoy. Whether it’s a hobby, exercise, or a weekend getaway, a little break can do wonders for your mental state. 5. Connect with Your Community Remember, layoffs are more common these days in tech, and many have walked this path before you. Engaging with a community can offer both support and opportunities. (But keep it positive) 6. Gather Feedback If possible, get feedback about your performance and departure. Use these insights to fortify your skills and address any areas of improvement. 7. Update Your Toolkit • Refresh your resume and LinkedIn profile with recent achievements. • Curate your portfolio to reflect your best work and new skills. • Practice your interview skills, focusing on explaining your recent job change positively. 8. Project Helping Hands: A Spotlight for Long-Term Job Seekers in Games! I’m excited to announce Project Helping Hands, an initiative ground-designed based on community feedback and voted on with a 97-3% positive margin. Our goal is to help long-term job seekers in games get the spotlight they deserve. If you've been unemployed or underemployed for 12 months or more, and have been seeking roles in games as part of your job search, this is for you! You don’t need to have been exclusively looking in games, but it does need to be at least part of your goal. Three times a week, I’ll spotlight up to 15 individuals looking for new opportunities. Just fill out the form below, and I’ll randomly select participants to feature along with a short bio you provide. Here’s what you need to know: There will be no public Excel list. The only public-facing portion of this is the spotlight post, which includes your name, function, years of experience, location, and whether you're open to remote work. When I post your spotlight (and tag you!), I strongly encourage you to drop a blurb about yourself in the comments to boost visibility. I will only accept submissions through the Google form and I will only accept complete applications, please. If we don’t get enough new applicants, I’ll repost those already featured. We're always evolving this community to focus on what helps gamers find jobs, not what’s flashy or number-grabbing. As with any resource in the community, we’ll evaluate this and adjust as needed. I also want to note that this initiative replaces our Thursday community spotlights because the impact data didn’t meet our benchmarks. Update: Rejected. By someone I have never met. Waste of my time, effort, and energy. This right here is why job seekers can’t put too much effort into one company, one position. I spent over 3 weeks learning all about a company for literally no reason at all. I am mentally, physically, and emotionally damaged, exhausted, and burned out. All I keep thinking of is Dory “just keep swimming” but wow I’m drowning. I think I bombed my third interview today. I had asked so many questions in the first two and was feeling so confident going into the third. There weren’t any questions for me, and I was not expecting that. It threw me off my game. I didn’t know what other questions to ask that I hadn’t already which is 100% my fault. I should have asked more questions about the company vs. the role. I haven’t been told no, but I’m mentally preparing for it. I’m still keeping my hopes up for this role, but making it known that I may not get this position I worked so hard for and studied so closely and in depth for. It’ll be 8 months in 4 days and I’m not sure how much longer it will last, or how I am going to keep moving forward and staying positive. So again, I’m asking my network for help. 5 weeks ago, I launched my new business with 390 followers and today we’re at 5k. To everyone that’s new - hello and thank you 👋 You guys are absolute legends! When I launched my business last month, my goal was to share insights on job searching, growing in your career, and landing a role in big tech. I initially viewed LinkedIn as a means to an end. Somewhere I could simply share my insights and personal stories. Over the past 5 weeks, I’ve learned that LinkedIn can be so much more than that. In the past month, I’ve met some of the smartest, kindest, most genuine people from companies like TikTok, Amazon, Snapchat, Shopify, Etsy, Intuit, Google, and Meta. I’ve also met jobseekers who have equally amazing career paths outside of tech who are interested in transitioning into it. I am so thankful for this little community we’ve built on LinkedIn. I need your help. For the past few months, I have been exploring a shift in my career. What started with motivation to stretch my skills and join an impactful, collaborative team full-time, has led me to a surprising conclusion: I want to get into tech - specifically a SaaS or Martech company serving ecommerce brands on the Customer Success or Marketing team. After 9+ years supporting emerging brands, specifically with ecommerce operations, integrated marketing strategy and building customer lifecycles, I have become an evangelist for some of these products (👀 👀 Shopify, Klaviyo, Okendo, Attentive, Triple Whale) and have seen their impact in action. I see this as a way to amplify my impact while continuing to build strategies, solve problems for and empower the businesses I love. I know my skills would integrate smoothly into these roles. I am selling, onboarding, integrating and optimizing these tools every day and I understand the challenges their customers are facing - but I'm finding it hard to get in front of hiring managers (admittedly, my job search skills are a little rusty) 💬 If you were making a transition from the brand side into tech, what skills would you emphasize to stand out? The major key to your better future is YOU. How frustrating it can be getting a paid role after you've successfully completed a tech course. No company wants to hire someone with no hands on experience(s). They are all going for those who have from 3years experience upwards, making you who is still at an entry-level feel worthless. I know how discouraging that can be. Over the past few weeks, can't count how many times and how many companies I've sent out my resumes to for a Product Management role, but keep on getting same responses. 😉 Tech jobs pay well and e dey sweet kwa😋 But what you were not told is that, as an entry level tech talent, you may find it hard landing a good gig, buh should that discourage you? NO.. As you are waiting to land a juicy job offer, Here's a few tips that would help you stay a float. 1. Don't stop fine-tuning your skills, don't stop reading and researching. 2. Attend tech events and Network. 3. Join a tech community. 4. Volunteer for tech roles - offer your time and skills for free where and when it is needed, this way you are getting the experience you'd be needing.. 5. Build a product or join a startup team to offer your skills, this too is part of the Volunteering.. The more you do all these the more values you build up around your portfolio..
